Making good on their acquisition of Marvel in August 2009, today Disney announced its first superhero thrill ride based on the Iron Man franchise.

The “Iron Man Experience” will open at Hong Kong Disneyland within the Tomorrowland area of the park in 2016.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs was in Hong Kong to make the announcement earlier today. He describes the ride in a press release posted on the Disney Parks blog, “Upon entering the ride vehicle our guests will be able to take flight with Iron Man on an epic adventure that not surprisingly pits Iron Man, and our guests, against the forces of evil. This adventure will take place in the streets and skies of Hong Kong, which will make an even more unique and special experience for our Hong Kong Disneyland guests. In addition, guests will be able to meet and take photos with Iron Man.”

Concept art for Disneyland Hong Kong’s “The Iron Man Experience” shows a ride vehicle similar to the simulator currently found in the Star Tours attractions at various Disney Parks around the world.

There was no mention of Robert Downey Jr. being involved to shoot scenes for the ride, but since he’s locked in to two more Avengers movies, it’s probably safe to say he’ll film new material for the attraction.

Rumors of a Marvel-themed area at Disney’s California resort have existed for months. The hottest rumors call for an entirely new Disney Park based on Marvel rides, while other speculation says that a Marvel ride will open up in Disneyland California’s Tomorrowland (just like what’s happening in Hong Kong).

Was Disney right to select ‘Iron Man’ for their first superhero thrill ride?
