Disney/Marvel has cornered the market on film crossovers, its first phase of films (including Avengers) have been rife with character appearances and references ever since Iron Man, but Iron Man 3 is set to break that streak by including no cameos from Tony Stark’s fellow Avengers.

The Iron Man 3 trailer from late October highlights that the events of The Avengers changed Tony Stark forever, but according to Marvel President Kevin Feige, that’s the most we’ll see from the superhero-mega-group in the Iron Man threequel.

Since Marvel was so heavy on the references and the cameos in Phase 1, it was easy to assume that Phase 2 would be the same, but Feige says that Iron Man 3 needs to prove that each Avenger is interesting all on his own.

“We’re sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together,” said Feige in an interview with Empire (via Slashfilm).

Iron Man 3 doesn’t feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had,” said Feige. “You have to keep in mind that Iron Man 3 had been in the works for almost a year, year and a half before The Avengers was released.”

That’s good news for fans hoping that the Iron Man franchise would remain loyal to Iron Man director Jon Favreau’s original vision, but bad news to those hoping to catch a glimpse of Black Widow or Bruce Banner during the film.

“It’s not a serious movie,” says Feige in another interview with The West Australian (via ComingSoon) concerning the general tone of Iron Man 3 and how it will connect with people who loved the original.

“We seriously dig into exploring more of Tony,” said Feige. “The trick is just trying to make great movies. We try to make them all great, all different and all fresh. What you’ll see in Iron Man 3 is some very unique directions that were taken.”

This follows up nicely to last month’s report that film-goers “shouldn’t expect aliens” in Iron Man 3. This points towards Iron Man 3‘s potential to guide the franchise back to real-world tone and give each franchise its own identity outside of The Avengers.

Either way, it’s probably safe to expect a little tease towards Thor: The Dark World after the credits, we just shouldn’t expect to see Captain America popping in to say hello during the film’s running time.

Will ‘Iron Man 3’ steer away from the tone of ‘The Avengers’?
