As a result of another successful Kickstarter fund, the Pebble watch is shipping out to backers of the project. The watch allows users to sync up with their smartphones in ways a regular watch never could before.

The Pebble watch uses Bluetooth technology to connect to Android and iOS devices, and alerts users for things like SMS notifications, emails, phone calls, and third party applications, according to IGN.com.

More features of the watch are accessible from the watch’s smartphone app, which allows owners to change the watch’s face, download additional functions for the Pebble, and update the watch’s software. The iPhone app is currently under approval from Apple, and will arrive for Android users via Google Play on January 24th.

It may seem odd that the “watch” doesn’t tell time as its primary function. However, Apple released an iPod nano in 2010 that had the capability of being used as a wristwatch, making the Pebble hot competition for the technologically older product.

What could be handy about the Pebble is that it will be convenient to quickly check emails or text messages in a places that are usually frowned upon, like in school or in a business meeting. This is perhaps the reason that the product was able to raise $10 million from its Kickstarter backers, far exceeding the original goal of $100,000.

Although people who pledged $1 or more back when Pebble’s Kickstarter was still live may be the only ones who were able to order them, Pebble’s creators claim that they are currently producing thousands of the product a day at Chinese-based factories.
