A new Into the Woods featurette finally shows footage of the cast singing.

Into the Woods hits theaters on December 25, and Disney is starting to ramp up the film’s promotion. Just yesterday a slew of a character posters/magazine covers were released showing off new looks of several of the film’s characters.

Today a new featurette has been released, embedded above (via EW). The featurette finally features some of the film’s music as Disney has apparently decided that it was time to “reveal” that the film is indeed a musical.

The fairly lengthy featurette shows Anna Kendrick (Cinderella), Daniel Huttlestone (Jack), James Corden (The Baker), Emily Blunt (The Baker’s Wife), and Meryl Streep (The Witch) singing “I Wish” (from “Act One Prologue”) as well as Streep singing “Stay With Me.”

A focus of the featurette is the film’s story and how far the characters push to get their wishes. As Emily Blunt points out, the theme of Into the Woods is to be careful what you wish for. Showing all of these fairy tales coming together to tell a very human story, this featurette gets us very excited for the film.

A real highlight is getting to hear bits and pieces of the Into the Woods score as written by Stephen Sondheim. Director Rob Marshall calls Sondheim the greatest living composer (with no respect given to John Williams).

Into the Woods is based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim. Lapine himself adapted the musical for the screen, and the film was directed by Rob Marshall, who also directed Chicago which won several Oscars, including Best Picture.

From the official synopsis, the film “surrounds a baker and his wife’s quest to break a witch’s curse in order to start a family. Along the way, they encounter several well-known fairy tale characters, and together they learn what happens after ‘happily ever after’.”
