Into the Badlands season 2 aired its final episode on Sunday night and more than one major character met their maker. But who were fans most upset about?

This is your final warning. If you haven’t seen Into the Badlands season 2, episode 10, “Wolf’s Breath, Dragon Fire,” turn away now. Major spoilers ahead.

The final battle between Sunny and Quinn was always going to be a destructive one, but we never knew which lives would be taken in the process. Quinn was likely to fall (I doubted they would make a repeat of the season 1 finale) with Sunny left standing, but there were plenty of bystanders who could be cut down in the process.

When all was said and done, Sunny had his son Henry in his arms, while Quinn had a sai to Veil’s heart. All the Baron wanted was the boy, and Veil would be left alive. That wasn’t an option for Veil, however, who chose to pierce her own heart in order to get to Quinn’s as well. Sunny’s enemy finally fell, but so did the love of his life.

As you can imagine, a lot of fans were upset by this turn of events. Veil was a prominent female character who not only had a storyline that centered around motherhood, but was also a skilled doctor and a compassionate woman.

Out of the main cast, she was also the only Black female lead. The idea that the show fridged her (by killing her off in order to enhance Sunny’s pain) isn’t sitting well with a lot of people.

To play Devil’s Advocate, I do see some merit in the idea that this was Veil’s choice and that she sacrificed herself in order to ensure her son would never have to know what a world would be like with Quinn in it. She’s had a good arc up until this point, with a lot of strength and as much agency as the story would allow

Yes, it’s true that this death was to enhance Sunny’s arc, and it’s a shame that she had to die because of it. At the same time, I’m curious to see how Sunny will be able to take care of his child in a world such as this. Who will he trust with Henry and how will the two of them survive together in such a volatile environment? How will Sunny change now that he is in full possession of his son?

No matter the reason, however, the truth of the matter is that Veil is dead and buried. It was an unfortunate element of the story and fans are understandably upset about it. Here are some reactions:

And if you’re curious what Veil herself has to say, here are a couple tweets from Madeleine Mantock herself:
