An interview with Shay Mitchell, who plays Emily Fields on ABC Family’s smash hit Pretty Little Liars , was recently published by Starry Constellation Magazine.

Mitchell discusses her character’s sexuality, fans, and more!

Q. Can you talk a little bit about Emily’s evolution from season one, not only with her sexuality, but with her family as well as her friends.

A. It’s been exactly like you said, an evolution, Emily has done a one eighty turn from when we first saw her in the pilot until now. She’s gained a lot more confidence and of course that stems from the fact that she can truly be who she was meant to be now. A huge weight was obviously lifted off of her shoulders in season one when she got to come out to her family and friends, although her mom wasn’t accepting of it before, she definitely has come around and is so much more supportive now and Emily’s father being away and coming back and even him knowing who Emily is now just makes it a lot easier for her as opposed to the first season where she had to hold in everything. I think there is this new sense of security and confidence that she’s kind of exuding now which is also helping her attract these new ladies that have come into her life. They see this confidence and they think that they like it so Emily has basically done a one hundred and eighty turn and I think there is a lot more going for her this season. She’s done pretty well in this duration of time.

Q. Did you expect the show to be such an international success like it has become?

A. It’s all over, it’s crazy. It’s in the Philippines and everywhere, it’s insane, but it’s so flattering to hear that they like it over there and they keep sending us photos of us being dubbed in all sorts of languages. It’s so funny, I love seeing those! It’s great getting feedback from all over the world on how much they like our show. Who can complain, it’s wonderful.

The magazine also suggested that there should be a Pretty Little Liars convention, to which Shay replied:

“I would love that, we should start campaigning for that, I also wouldn’t mind traveling a whole bunch too to these countries where our show is doing well. I am with you on that!”

What a great idea! Read more here.
