Fringe star John Noble teases the upcoming series finale of the show and reflects back on Walter’s five-year journey.

Tomorrow night, Fringe will air its final episode before the two-part season finale. We joined a group of journalists on a phone call with actor John Noble, who talked about finishing work on the series and how his character’s story wraps up.

Speaking about the final episode, which airs January 18, Noble admits that the show, “Finished off as well as I could have dreamed of.” He previews “beautiful moments” between Walter and the other main characters, particularly with Peter (Joshua Jackson). “The way that his relationship with Peter plays out in the finale is really quite remarkable,” he says.

Before he read the script, Noble admits that he was, “naturally apprehensive,” as they weren’t sure how showrunner Joel Wyman was planning to wrap it up. But ultimately, “it was everything I’d hoped it could possibly be,” the actor says, adding that Wyman did a, “masterly job in writing it, he tied up the story arcs… I was extremely elated when I read the final episodes.”

Noble even goes so far as to call the script, “the best finale I’ve ever read, just in terms of being able to tie up the five years,” and commends Joel Wyman on being able to pull everything together in the way he did. “It’s certainly going with a bang,” Noble says, and reveals that the final episode answered all the questions he had. “I hope that history will judge it as one of the greatest finales of all time,” he adds.

In terms of Walter’s role in the finale, naturally Noble won’t give away what happens, but does say that, “we know that something radical has to happen in order to beat the Observers, and maybe Walter has to do something pretty outstanding to make this happen.”

Will it be the ultimate sacrifice? Noble won’t say, but assures us that the fans will be, “very thrilled and honoured” by the way the story wraps up. “I think it’s the perfect arc for Walter,” Noble reflects. “The perfect way to complete his journey. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”

Fringe is back tomorrow night with the episode “The Boy Must Live,” which airs at 9/8c. Next Friday, it’s time for the two-part series finale, titled “An Enemy of Fate.”
