The Inky Awards allow teenagers to vote for their favourite Australian and international YA novel. How many shortlisted books have you read?

The Inky Awards shortlist was narrowed down from an initial longlist of 20 books. The shortlist was determined by a panel of Australian teen judges, and the winner of the Inky Awards will be decided by a popular vote.

We are always happy to see authors getting recognition for their work. But even more than that, short lists (and long lists, for the more ambitious readers) give us a great way to add to our always growing list of books to read.

The Inky Awards are an initiative run by the Centre for Youth Literature in Australia, through their Insideadog project.

Earlier this year, the Centre presented the Reading Matters conference, where Hypable spoke to authors such as Gayle Forman (If I Stay), Gabrielle Williams (The Reluctant Hallelujah), and Myke Bartlett (Fire in the Sea).

The Gold Inky is awarded to the most popular new Australian Young Adult novel, while the Silver Inky is awarded to an international book.

Gold Inky short list:
Girl Defective by Simmone Howell
My Life as an Alphabet by Barry Jonsberg
Cry Blue Murder by Kim Kane and Marion Roberts
Life in Outer Space by Melissa Keil
Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield

Silver Inky short list:
The Diviners by Libba Bray
See You At Harry’s by Jo Knowles
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

There are some fantastic books on this list, and as far as a new ‘to read’ list goes, there would be worse places to start. Let us know in the comments if you have read any of these, and if so, how many?

Voting for the Inky Awards is now open to voters aged 12-20 years old.
