Disney has announced that a fifth installment of Indiana Jones is now in development and will open in theaters in three years.

Indiana Jones 5 will open on July 19, 2019 with Steven Speilberg at the helm and Harrison Ford in the starring role. “Franchise Veterans” Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will return to produce as well. Notably, past Indy producer George Lucas is not named in the press release.

Said Walt Disney Studios head Alan Horn in a statement, “Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor, and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

The last Indy, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, opened in theaters in 2008 and co-starred Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf. Since then it was unclear if Harrison would return for another installment, which led the rumor mill to start speculating that Chris Pratt would take over. Currently we do not know anything about Harrison’s co-stars for Indy 5.

Harrison Ford recently completed his role as Han Solo in Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars series. Let’s hope Indy doesn’t have the same fate as Han.

The July 19, 2019 release date is one week after Marvel’s Inhumans is scheduled to open, which is also owned by Disney. Don’t be surprised if Inhumans moves to another date so that neither film hurts the other’s box office potential.

Harrison will be 77 by the time Indiana Jones 5 opens. Might this be Ford’s final installment?
