Indiana Jones 5 has been confirmed by Hollywood producer and Lucasfilms president Kathleen Kennedy as being a continuation of the franchise rather than a reboot.

Though it seems like every other movie in the theaters or in production is a reboot or a remake of some sort, it looks like the upcoming fifth entry in the Indiana Jones franchise won’t take part in the trend.

In a recent interview with the BBC, famed Hollywood producer and current Lucasfilms president Kathleen Kennedy gave an update on the long-gestating fifth installment, saying that the studio is “working away, getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go. She went on to confirm that “Harrison Ford will be involved,” and “can’t wait” to get started and that the newest Indiana Jones movie is “not a reboot. It’s a continuation.”

The last Indiane Jones film was 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which starred Harrison Ford as the titular archaeologist and Shia LaBeouf as Indiana Jones’ son Mutt Williams (born Henry Walton Jones III).

Though the film was polarizing among critics, it was a hit with audiences, making nearly $800 million worldwide on a $185 million budget. It came right at the start of the modern age of comic book movies, and was the third-highest grossing movie domestically behind The Dark Knight and Iron Man and second highest internationally behind The Dark Knight.

Rumors of a fifth Indiana Jones cropped up immediately after the release of the fourth film. However, it wasn’t until 2015 during an interview with Vanity Fair that Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that plans were underway for a fifth film.

Solo writer Jonathan Kasdan was initially hired to pen the script, but that has since fallen through, with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer David Koepp back to write the newest installment.

There’s no word yet on any plot details or when filming might begin. However, Indiana Jones 5 is currently scheduled for release on July 9, 2021.
