After years of waiting, Incredibles 2 finally arrived in theaters, and its opening weekend wasn’t just an incredible one, it was one for the record books.

Sequels can be tricky, especially in a cinematic age where many of us are suffering from sequel/reboot fatigue, and even more so when the sequel is of a very beloved film that much of the audience first saw as children. Still, that didn’t stop Disney-Pixar from taking their time to expertly craft a solid sequel to the smash hit, The Incredibles. And judging by box office numbers, Incredibles 2 was anything but a fan disappointment.

As Variety reports, the opening weekend for Incredibles 2 was a record-breaking $180 million across 4,410 theaters, earning the film the best opening weekend for an animated picture of all time. The title was originally held by another Disney-Pixar sequel, Finding Dory, which earned $135 million. Additionally, Incredibles 2 had the 8th biggest domestic opening of all time and passed 2017’s Beauty and the Beast for the best opening weekend for a PG-rated film.

Unsurprisingly, the movie topped box offices this weekend, beating out the other newly released films Tag and Superfly. Ocean’s 8 is still holding strong at the box office, coming in behind the super-family with $19.5 million in its second weekend, but Incredibles 2 was clearly the hot ticket last weekend.

But in addition to smashing box office records, Incredibles 2 is doing a great job pleasing fans and critics alike, so it looks like this movie isn’t even close to done killing it at the box office. So while moviegoers are experiencing sequel fatigue with other movies, it seems the intense amount of work that went into creating Incredibles 2 has paid off in a huge way.
