To the fans of ‘Sherlock’ it should come as no surprise that the current episodes are based, mostly very loosely and normally only by similar titles, to the original novels and short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. For example, the first episode of Sherlock, ‘A Study in Pink’, was named after the first Sherlock Holmes novel, ‘A Study in Scarlet’.

While the episodes usually end the similarities to the novels with the title, the season two finale title (The Reichenbach Fall) may be a bit concerning. Why? Because the novel ‘The Final Problem’ is the novel in which Sherlock Holmes dies. Still, what is the similiarity here? Well, the Reichenbach Falls is the site of both Holmes and Moriarity’s death. In short, they fall to their deaths after a brawl atop the falls.

Now, there is a bit of evidence to support their deaths. For one, when asked if Cumberbatch would return for ‘Sherlock – Season Three’, he replied “You might see that it’s quite hard for me to make it back, after the end of the last episode.” Is the death of Sherlock Holmes the reason he cannot return? Secondly, the episode is not called ‘The Reichenbach Falls’, it’s called the ‘The Reichenbach Fall’. Is the title forshadowing the fall and death of Sherlock and Moriarity, or only one of them?

However, Conan Doyle brought back Sherlock Holmes as fans asked for more books. He obliged, but Moriarty still died. Moriarty is a brilliant character in ‘Sherlock’, and it would be a shame to see him go. But it should be remembered that the books and the series are very different to each other.

So my question is, who will die in the Sherlock finale?
