In the Heights has finally been given a new theatrical release date by Warner Bros., — but that also means fans will have to wait a bit longer before they can see the hit Tony Award winning musical come to life on the big screen.

Like many other films originally slated to be released in spring and early summer, Warner Bros., In the Heights had its originally scheduled release date upended by the current coronavirus pandemic.

Now, it’s looking as though the studio has finally settled on a brand new date for the highly anticipated movie musical.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, In the Heights has now been given a brand new release date of June 18, 2021.

The newly scheduled date sets the release of the film back by just shy of a full year.

Originally, adaptation was set to hit the big screen in just a few months time on June 26, 2020. With theaters across the country no closer to reopening in light of the coronavirus pandemic however, it likely comes as no surprise that we’ll have to wait way longer than expected before we can head to the movies to see the film.

Director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) took to Twitter shortly after the film’s new release date was announced to share the news with fans far and wide.

“After long conversations and sleepless nights of uncertainty, we have decided the best time to release #InTheHeightsMovie is next summer when people will feel the MOST comfortable celebrating in a movie theater TOGETHER,” tweeted Chu. “I know it’s much later than we wanted but #InTheHeightsMovie didn’t take 10 years to get made only to be left in half empty theaters w/out the crowd it deserves! So thank you for your patience and faith…and when we get through this time and the movie comes out we are throwing a HUGE EFFING PARTY LIKe YOU NEVER SEEN BEFORE.”

In addition, Lin-Manuel Miranda chimed in with a few words of his own, tweeting: “So we’ve got the summer/ and we’ve got each other/ Perhaps even longer.”

In the Heights hits theaters on June 18, 2021.
