In the Heights, the big picture adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical, has finally released its first trailer!

At long last, we have our first official look at the big picture adaptation of In the Heights. The Tony Award-winning musical comes from, of course, the genius Lin-Manuel Miranda (who, if you’re not familiar with In the Heights, also wrote a little musical called Hamilton), and is directed by the genius who brought us Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M. Chu.

Whether you’re familiar with Heights or not, this trailer is nothing short of beautiful. With Miranda’s heart-pounding lyrics in the background and the amazing visuals adapting iconic scenes for the big screen, this trailer is going to have you counting down the days until the movie hits theaters.

All day yesterday, both Miranda and Chu teased the release of the trailer, even releasing a quick teaser trailer to get us ready for the full trailer. And this has absolutely lived up to the hype.

If you’re familiar with the Broadway production of In the Heights, you’ll know that Miranda himself played the role of Usnavi in the original cast. While Miranda does still appear in the film (and the trailer) as Piragua Guy, the mantle of Usnavi has passed to Anthony Ramos.

Ramos has starred in several movies and TV shows, appearing in the Will & Grace reboot, A Star Is Born, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But he’s got an impressive theater resume as well, most notably playing the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton.

The music in the trailer is beautiful, and In the Heights provides a perspective and a celebration of Latinx individuals that we don’t often see in mainstream media. And with a cast filled with talented individuals like Miranda, Ramos, Stephanie Beatriz, Jimmy Smits, and more, this movie is going to be one you can’t miss.

Of course, it’s always tough adapting a Broadway musical to the big screen, but with the amazing direction from Jon M. Chu and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s involvement, the In the Heights movie has everything it needs to please fans of the original musical while adapting well to this new medium. Plus, a story that celebrates the story of the Latinx community and immigrants in a quickly-disappearing New York neighborhood is incredibly timely and needed.

If you are new to this musical, you can check out the original Broadway cast recording of In the Heights on your favorite music streamer. And you can see the big-screen adaptation of this amazing musical when it dances into theaters in the summer of 2020.
