Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company which is responsible for the effects in the massive 2012 hit The Avengers, has released a video featuring their work on the battle scene which took place in New York.

ILM is a subsidiary of Lucasfilm, which was recently purchased by Disney for $4.05 billion. They got their start by working on the first Star Wars film and have gone on to become one of the most highly regarded VFX companies in the industry. Below you’ll see some of their work that they did on The Avengers.

The video focuses on the battle in New York at the end of the film and how difficult it was to have all the superheroes together on one screen finally. Essentially everything we see in the battle is computer generated and even New York itself is a digital panoramic or virtual New York so that the actors can be placed anywhere within the city.

ILM notes that the digital doubles for each actor had to be become real in this film, as Joss Whedon wanted close-ups of the fighting which wasn’t always humanly possible. Take a look at the video below and see just how much goes into making these shots which work so seamlessly when viewed on the big screen.
