If I Stay by Gayle Forman was released in 2007 and optioned by Summit Entertainment a short time after. The project will now move forward at MGM.

According to Variety, Summit put the project in turnaround earlier this year. Originally Chloe Moretz was on board to play Mia, the classically trained musician who is in a fatal accident with her family, but when the project was put in turnaround Moretz stepped aside. Now it seems that she is in final talks with MGM to play Mia once again.

RJ Cutler will remain on as director. Lionsgate will still distribute with MGM co-producing the project.

If I Stay follows 17-year-old Mia as she deals with the aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. In a coma, Mia has an out-of-body experience, and observes those around her as she is being treated. The story is told partially in flashback as Mia comes to realize that she must decide if she to wake up and lead a life far more difficult than she ever anticipated, or to slip away and die. Where She Went is the sequel to If I Stay and was released in 2011.
