The Legend of Korra already boasts several alumni from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a new interview with Mae Whitman suggests she might be next to join the new series.

In a new interview with IGN.com, actress Mae Whitman suggested that she would be eager to join the cast of Nickelodeon’s animated series The Legend of Korra. Whitman previously voiced the character of Katara in the companion series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which concluded in 2008.

When asked if there was any chance she might join the cast of Korra, Whitman responded, “I’d say definitely… I’m obviously a huge fan of that.” She added, “I’m also glad there’s a new [Avatar] story to follow.”

The Avatar fandom at large seems to have a special place in Whitman’s heart as well. “I love that the fans are so passionate about it,” she continued. “And going to Comic-Con and seeing people dressed up as Katara just makes me so happy.”

As for a potential role for herself on The Legend of Korra, Whitman said, “I know it probably wouldn’t be Katara, but if there was any way I could be a part of that… I wouldn’t be surprised if I somehow weaseled my way onto that show as well.” The actress indicated that she maintains friendly connections with the creative team behind the two shows, saying, “Those guys are all my friends… I think it’s on their radar that I’m really passionate about all their projects.”

Whitman would not be the first cast member to transition from Avatar: The Last Airbender to The Legend of Korra. Dante Basco (Zuko) returned to the Avatarverse in the role of General Iroh, grandson of his previous character. Likewise, Dee Bradley Baker (Appa and Momo) returned to provide the animal voices for Pabu and Naga, in addition to voicing Tarrlok, a major antagonist in the first season.

It has also been reported that Grey DeLisle (Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender) will voice a character called “The Dark Spirit” in the upcoming second season of The Legend of Korra. Perhaps appropriately, fans have so far been kept in the dark about any more specific details regarding DeLisle’s new character.

Though no air date has been announced, it has been rumored that The Legend of Korra will return to Nickelodeon in April of next year.
