In two separate instances over the past month, Sir Ian McKellen has been captured on video channeling his inner Gandalf and offering a proclamation to students.

In this first Instagram video from this past Monday, McKellen appears in front of a group of students in Oxford to apparently offer students a pep talk on doing well in school.

“What happens if you don’t study?” McKellen asks them. “YOU. SHALL. NOT. PASS,” of course!

McKellen was spotted pulling the same joke on students at Chew Valley School in mid-October. As you can see, the students are delighted when he brings out Gandalf for a moment.

We’re a bit surprised that the kids in this video know what he’s doing considering how young they look. Maybe it’s a requirement over in England to watch The Lord of the Rings series. Surely all kids in that audience will watch it now (or again) after getting to experience the classic line in person.

The actor is, of course, the man who plays Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. The “YOU. SHALL. NOT. PASS.” line appeared in the first Middle Earth-based film The Fellowship of the Ring:

You can see McKellen portray the wizard one last time in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies next month.
