The E! docu-series I Am Cait, following Caitlyn Jenner’s life post-transition, premiered Sunday night.

Opening with a 4:32 a.m. confessional on Vanity Fair launch day, I Am Cait presented an interesting look at the issues people in the transgender community struggle with as they reveal themselves to their family.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce, noted toward the start of the hour-long premiere that it can’t be a fairy tale transition for everyone — an important comment to make so that viewers can trust the messages in this new series. “I feel a tremendous responsibility here because I have a voice. And there are so many trans people out there who don’t have a voice,” she said.

The focus of the I Am Cait premiere was Caitlyn meeting her mother and sisters for the first time following the transition. Both mom and daughter spoke openly about the pressures of introducing themselves to each other — a powerful moment that anyone who’s battling a big announcement like this will be able to find strength in.

“It’s okay!” Caitlyn told her mom.

“I knew it would be!” Esther replied.

Despite the initial acceptance, Esther’s hesitance toward accepting Caitlyn created the “tension” of the episode. Caitlyn invited an expert on gender over to the house to answer any questions Esther may have, and the matriarch, who appeared to be deeply religious, asked a question about the Bible’s acceptance of transgendered people. The expert didn’t have a firm answer about the Bible’s take on trans people, but she said she’s never met a transgendered person who was only going through a phase.

Later, Caitlyn had a one-on-one conversation with her mother, who expressed more concerns that any parent in this situation would have, like calling their child by a new name.

After getting mom on her side, the focus of the episode turned to helping others in the transgender community — especially those who, in Caitlyn’s words, consider the “permanent” option of suicide to their “temporary” problem.

The final act of the episode featured a visit from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The rapper spoke about his support for the transgendered community (“I think this is one of the strongest things that has happened in our existence as human beings”) and showed off his sock shoes while Kim got a tour of Caitlyn’s closet (“I was secretly dying… in your last closet,” Kim told Cait).

After the visit from the A-list couple, Caitlyn made a trip to San Diego to visit a family who lost their transgender teenager Kyler to suicide. Tragically, Kyler died days before his revised birth certificate noted his change in gender. Kyler’s mother had a touching conversation with Caitlyn about raising a transgendered child in today’s society.

I Am Cait mixed E!’s style of reality television with an honest look at someone who’s starting a new life. Our one negative thought about the show? We could’ve done without the dramatic cliffhangers before commercial breaks because they reminded us that this is still an E! reality series. On the bright side, it’s clear the show will be an eye-opening look at a community of people who is slowly but surely gaining acceptance in the United States.

Caitlyn Jenner will undoubtedly play a big role in that journey.
