Ringer, the first new series of the fall season, premiered last night! Did you love it? Hate it? Did you even watch it? We did, and these are Hypable writers Selina and Jen’s thoughts on the pilot episode!

In the first episode of Ringer, we are introduced to Bridget, an alcoholic and witness to a murder, who escapes from her FBI protectors because she believes that they won’t be able to stop the murderer coming after her. Bridget travels to New York, where she reunites with her estranged twin sister Siobhan – only Siobhan stages her own death, leaving Bridget to take her place. Soon, Bridget finds out how much of a mess the life Siobhan left her is: Siobhan was stranded in a loveless marriage, had an affair with her best friend’s husband, and was four weeks pregnant! Not only that, but Bridget discovers that she traded one set of enemies for another, as she is assaulted by a masked man… who it looks like Siobhan sent after her, because surprise, she’s still alive!

Here’s our initial thoughts on the pilot episode:

Jen: I usually love shows with twins, especially if one is not so nice, because the duplicity of a twin storyline has so many options. In Ringer we meet Bridget and Siobhan, estranged twins played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Bridget is a recovering addict and Siobhan is a wealthy socialite, so there are clearly some great differences to explore. But I didn’t really find either twin likable or, sadly, all that interesting.  The pilot threw a lot of information at you and it felt like a plot dump. I’m not sure how the show will fair.  I’ll watch next week just to make sure, but I think this show is a pass for me.
Rating: 3/5

Selina: Well I suppose it’s nice to have polarized viewpoints: I loved the pilot! While I do think the editing was too disjointed, which meant that a lot of things sort of happened in very abrupt succession, I can see what they were going for, and I think the style really fits the show. As far as the acting goes, Sarah Michelle Gellar truly brought it. She was marvelous as Siobhan and especially Bridget, and I’m not just saying that as a Buffy fan (speaking of: it was hard to see her running away from a fight! But I digress). I also thought that Ioan Gruffudd’s performance really stood out. He has a sort of rugged Colin Firth quality; a kind man grown bitter and cruel in a loveless marriage. I can’t wait to watch his character develop! I realize that this show has been getting mixed feedback, but personally I was all about this show. It’s a different kind of drama from the usual CW programming, and I really enjoyed the change of pace.
