Hypable’s Monthly Movie Preview is back, and here to satisfy your movie needs by highlighting which films we think YOU should see each weekend in the month of December.

Here are our picks for the best opener each weekend:

December 2

Coriolanus
Outrage
Shame
Sleeping Beauty

Our Reasoning:

As far as wide releases, this week is completely empty of new additions. If you’re lucky enough to live near a theater playing smaller films, Shame just so happens to be both one of the best films of the year, as well as one of the most difficult to take in. Featuring two of the best performances in recent years from Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, the film tackles the harsh and difficult subject of a man dealing with sex addiction. While the film is definitely not for everyone (it’s rated NC-17), for those who can stomach the emotional brutality of the film, it will be sure to impress!

December 9

I Melt With You
New Year’s Eve
The Sitter
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
W.E.
We Need To Talk About Kevin
Young Adult

Our Reasoning:

This is a pretty jam-packed week for new releases, both limited and wide, but if we had to put our bets on one film, it would be Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Based on the acclaimed series of novels by John Le Carre, and featuring an all-star cast with the likes of Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, and many more, that alone will get us into the theater. Add director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) and an intriguing spy noire plot, we’re sold.

December 16

Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked!
Carnage
The Lady
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Our Reasoning:
While Carnage has been getting mixed reviews, we’re intrigued by anything director Roman Polanski has to offer. Add a fantastic cast of Christoph Waltz, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, and Jodie Foster and the performances alone should make this film a success. Based on an award-winning play, the film apparently does not leave the NYC apartment in which it is set, which should provide for some excellent dialogue!

December 23

The Adventures of Tintin
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
In the Land of Blood and Honey
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
We Bought a Zoo

Our Reasoning:
We’re major fans of both the book and swedish film, so now that David Fincher (The Social Network) is making an english version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo we’re extremely excited to see it. So far the footage and images we’ve seen of Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig have been pretty fantastic, as has the soundtrack which features a reunion between Fincher and The Social Network composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. What’s not to be excited about?

December 25 [Sunday Release]

The Darkest Hour
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Pariah
War Horse

Our Reasoning:
The holiday season has always been notoriously full of excellent films, and this year is no different. We’re sure to be catching multiple films over these few weeks, but if we had to pick on Christmas release it would be War Horse. Steven Spielberg has an incredible eye for capturing war, and as a World War I picture, we anticipate this one being no different. The inspiring nature of the subject matter, as well as the idea of using an animal for emotional connection seems like it could work in the film’s favor as well. War Horse should be a serious Oscar contender!

There you have it. Are there any films we missed that you’re looking forward to over December?
