Lost Girl is Syfy channel’s latest original show imported from Canada, and I wish I had known about it sooner.  Lost Girl is a smart, sexy show that lovers of True Blood and Veronica Mars will thoroughly enjoy.

Synopsis:

Lost Girl follows supernatural seductress Bo (Anna Silk: Being Erica; Billable Hours), a Succubus who feeds on the sexual energy (sometimes called “Chi”) of humans.  Growing up with human parents, Bo has no reason to believe she’s anything other than the girl next door – until she drains her boyfriend to death in their first sexual encounter. Once she hits the road, Bo discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them secretly, as they have for millennia. Relieved yet horrified to find out that she is not alone, Bo is faced with choosing an allegiance between the Dark and Light Fae clans.  Bo decides to take the middle path between the humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin.

With the help of her human sidekick, Kenzi (Ksenia Solo: Black Swan, Life Unexpected), Bo takes on a challenge every week helping a Fae or human client who comes to her to solve a mystery, or to right a wrong.  Already in a love triangle with Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried: Ben Hur, The Bridge; The Tudors), a sexy Fae working as a human police detective, and the beautiful human scientist, Lauren (Zoie Palmer: The Guard; Instant Star) who works for the Fae, Bo’s love life is about to get even more complicated.

There are so many wonderful things about this show that it may be hard to discuss them all.  First off let’s start with the characters. A show is only as good as the characters and the actors who portray them.  Lost Girl has some very unique characters whether they are Fae or human.  Bo is expertly played by Anna Silk.  She is new to the whole world of the Fae, even though she is one, and sometimes makes mistakes but always has the best of intentions.  Anna Silk finds just the right balance of naïveté and fierceness to make Bo a well rounded character.   Then there is Dyson played by Kris Holden-Ried.  Dyson is a character with a long history and many secrets.  At times he and Bo are at odds, but there is always something simmering just below the surface.  Dyson is an enigmatic character played with subtle nuances by Kris Holden-Ried.  His storyline is by far one of my favorites.  Rounding out the list of characters is Kenzi and Hale – respectively Bo and Dyson’s sidekicks.  Kenzi is sassy and street smart, constantly helping Bo figure out what to do next.  Ksenia Solo is perfection as the wise cracking sidekick. Hale is a siren and can also deliver the one liners that add levity to a serious situation.  He is also good for Dyson who can sometimes be too serious or stubborn.  The interactions between Kenzi and Hale are always entertaining and one of the best parts of the show.

The next factor that makes this such a good show is the story telling.  Lost Girl brings the elements of the Fae world into the human world seamlessly.  In order to earn money Bo works as a private investigator for the Fae and humans.  Each show follows a case but also furthers Bo’s journey in discovering who she truly is.  The writing is sharp and funny, constantly hinting at the overarching plotlines.  New Fae, such as Selkies and the Furies, are introduced as clients. They keep the storylines fresh and infusing the plot with new lore. I’ve watched several episodes and I am constantly surprised by where this story goes.

I think what I find most special about this show is its uniqueness.  While it has elements of shows we’ve seen before, the Fae world opens up new lore to be explored.  Creating a contemporary urban fantasy world isn’t easy, but Lost Girl has struck just the right balance between the world that we know and the world of the Fae.  I highly recommend checking out Lost Girl on SyFy.  It airs tonight at 10 PM EST.
