This week we said goodbye to Parenthood season 5, Scandal season 3, and Mom season 1, but after the performances that we were treated to this week, we’re anything but sad.

Shocks and twists abound as television continues the best part of its year. Agents of SHIELD has us all in worried puddles on the floor, The Originals may have just let Elijah off his leash, and a half hour sitcom, Mom, gave us a finale that almost made us cry more than the Scandal one (We said almost).

In the most competitive week yet (particularly for the dramatic category), we somehow managed to pick a few of our favorites, so here are this week’s chosen performances for Hypable Honors, and we’ll warn you, it’s a bit of a boys club.

Drama

Show: ‘The Originals’

Actor: Daniel Gillies

Dan Gillies never disappoints when it comes to his character, Elijah Mikaelson, on The Originals, but in this week’s return episode for the freshman spin-off, he raised the bar for himself.

Elijah is an honorable killer, a noble soul trapped in the body of an immortal monster, and the two opposing sides of his personality have always been at war. In this episode, the portion of himself that he has always dedicated solely to family loyalty may have finally cracked. Klaus has fully embraced his werewolf brethren, and Elijah made it perfectly clear that he will no longer deny himself the things he wants (*cough* Hayley *cough*).

There is an incredible amount of difficulty in playing a character so devoted to his moral righteousness, but Daniel Gillies has always turned what could easily be boring or annoying into the most interesting part of what makes Elijah tick. Watching Elijah finally tell Klaus what has been marinating in his head for all these years makes it easy to appreciate the many talents of Daniel Gillies. We can’t wait to see what is ahead for his character, at the very least because it means more Daniel. Yes, please.

Otherwise Noteworthy

Show: ‘Once Upon a Time’

Actor: Colin O’Donoghue

In the first Hook centric episode since we saw him as a proper sailor in season 2, Colin O’Donoghue had us eating out of the palm of his hand, er… hook. Without a doubt, Captain Hook has had quite the transformation over the last 17 episodes, but watching him digest just how noble his new motivations are, and just how much he cares about Emma was far and away the best plotline we have had for him yet.

Not only is the character progressing through his feelings for Emma, he is slowly understanding that his most basic of motivations, pirating, has changed. Colin had some very heavy material to deliver this past week, and we couldn’t be more impressed as a fandom. From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you for helping make Captain Hook a daydream worthy man.

Show: ‘Arrow’

Actor: Paul Blackthorne

There are many men and women on Arrow doing amazing work (including previous honoree, Stephen Amell), but in this week’s episode “The Man Under the Hood” the focus of our praise is a beat cop with a heart of gold.

Paul Blackthorne, better known to Arrow fans as Detective Lance, stole every scene he appeared in this week. As a cop stuck in a jail cell, a father trying to help his daughter, and an ally to a mysterious stranger, Paul Blackthorne proved that Detective Lance is the heart of Arrow.

Detective Lance shows that even the normal citizens of Starling City can make a difference, and sometimes that includes keeping silent when everyone wants your answers. It is truly remarkable how attached we are to Detective Lance now, and we can’t wait to see what the final three episodes of season 2 have in store for his character.

Comedy

Show: ‘Mom’

Actor: Sadie Calvano

So, this category is supposed to be all about the funny, but this week, the funny brought tears and we couldn’t sit by and let it go unrecognized. For those not watching Mom (and you really should be), Sadie Calvano plays Violet, the 3rd generation of teen mothers in her family. The last episode of season 1 had her in the hospital about to give birth to a baby girl that she would hand over to a loving family to raise. While the show never ceases to bring the funny, Sadie Calvano managed to both make us laugh and cry as she makes the tough choice to let someone else raise her child.

It’s not easy playing opposite the likes of Anna Faris and Alison Janney every week, but Calvano has always held her own. We can’t wait to see where this show takes her character next season, as we’re sure there are great things to come.

Show: ‘Glee’

Actor: Darren Criss

So, this week’s episode had some truly dramatic and profound moments for our newest New Yorker, but he had us laughing our asses off too. It’s so incredibly accurate that moving to a new place has you acting in all sorts of odd ways, and Blaine’s manifested itself with food. Gaining a few pounds is the bane of every college freshman’s existence, and for Blaine, this was only compounded by the inferiority he was feeling.

Darren Criss can bring the funny, the tears, heck, even the smug and we are completely on board, but this week, watching him stuff his face with cheetos while Chris Colfer’s Kurt strutted around shirtless and stage fighting his classmates, we couldn’t help but laugh with him as tears fell down our faces. And beautiful tears they were.

Show: ‘The Mindy Project’

Actor: Chris Messina

He may not have come right out and said it, but Danny Castellano is regretting his decision to stop dating Mindy in this week’s episode, “Think Like a Peter.” Whether he’s begging around the office for someone who needs his expert life advice or walking in on Morgan and Tamra making out in the pantry, Danny seems a little lost.

We always knew Messina could bring the dramatic, per his role as Reese Lansing on The Newsroom amongst many others, but his comedic chops were on full display this week. Mindy is trying to find a way to move past her heartbreak, and Danny is trying to fill the hole she is leaving behind. We know that a future reconciliation is in the cards at some point, but for now, we will enjoy watching Danny try and find a new girlfriend.

Who did you think gave the best performance this week?
