This week was chock full of impressive performances, but somehow we managed to pick a few of our favorites to award Hypable Honors.

This week marked the beginning of the ‘ends’ as Teen Wolf season 3 closed its doors, and many of our other favorites will follow closely behind. There were also a few significant deaths, which always signals that the craziest time of year, finale time, is fast approaching. Shows want to raise the stakes, and when you raise the stakes, you almost certainly raise the bar for your actors.

With no further ado, here are our choices for this week’s Hypable Honors:

Drama

Show: ‘Teen Wolf’

Actor: Dylan O’Brien

For anyone living under a rock that is unaware of the amazing work being done on MTV’s Teen Wolf, this may come as a bit of a shock, but Dylan O’Brien has been lighting up the screen this winter. His run on the show as the nogitsune this season has taken his character to places we never could have anticipated, and O’Brien’s performance in the season 3 finale was the icing on the cake. The subtlety of his portrayal of the evil trickster spirit blew us away all season long, but seeing the fox break down as his human counterpart outsmarts him took this actor to new levels.

While creator Jeff Davis and his team kept the twists and turns coming, it was O’Brien that brought new aspects to the character week after week. Whether it was tapping his fingers on the blade stabbing his best friend, or directing the Oni to do his bidding, Void Stiles added many opportunities for O’Brien to show what he can do, and he blew us all away.

Show: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Actor: Sandra Oh:

Sandra Oh has been charming us as the feisty and fickle Christina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy for many years now, but tonight’s episode literally gave her fans the ‘best of both worlds’ treatment. Oh was absolutely fantastic in her portrayal of the many different paths Christina Yang’s story may have taken in last night’s episode. The slightest change in her choices led to drastically different futures such as: married to Owen with two kids, single and the winner of four consecutive Harper-Avery awards, and many other combinations in between.

In one episode, we managed to see what Christina’s life could have been, satisfying much curiosity. As the character’s future has become dangerously uncertain (due to this being Oh’s final season and Shonda Rhimes’ addiction to killing off Seattle doctors), this episode was a beautifully acted version of what everyone wanted to see for Christina. Hopefully her ending is a happy one, but there are no guarantees in Shondaland.

Show: ‘Teen Wolf’:

Actor: Max Carver

The twins, Aiden and Ethan, have not been the most popular characters on Teen Wolf, mainly because Aiden identified with the more vicious parts of werewolf life, and enjoyed wreaking havoc with the lives of our heroes throughout season 3A. Their redemption arc in 3B was secondary to the nogitsune craziness, and it came to a rapid end in this week’s finale.

While fighting alongside Derek to help free Stiles from the nogitsune’s grip, Aiden manages to kill the final Oni with Alison Argent’s silver-tipped arrow, but takes a katana to the stomach in the process. While werewolves have the ability to heal, there are some injuries even they cannot come back from. The moment that stands out the most was his final thoughts on his place in the villain/hero hierarchy when he says, “It’s OK. Lydia never believed I was one of the good guys anyway.” Derek then replies with a very reverential attitude, “She’ll believe me.” What a beautiful way to end a character whose heart may not have truly known where it belonged.

Comedy

Show: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

Actor: Joe Lo Truglio

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has sky-rocketed to the top of the comedy leader board with its premiere season, quickly establishing itself as a different kind of comedy. The show would be nothing without its best supporting man, Charles Boyle, played by Joe Lo Truglio. He is Jake’s right-hand man on the force, and he makes the whole show work. His over-the-top antics and naivety keep the actual seriousness of police work from overtaking the good-natured humor of the show.

Whether he is running his pizza blog or hitting on Rosa, Boyle is one of the best things to happen to the Nine-Nine, and we certainly couldn’t imagine the show without him, and we don’t think his precinct would disagree, especially Jake.

Show: Modern Family

Actor: Julie Bowen

The Dunphy family matriarch is the glue that keeps the family going, but when she gets an opportunity to do something crazy, she gives it her all.

This week’s episode showed the Dunphy-Pritchett adults playing in Las Vegas, and Claire was on a mission. She managed to one-up Las Vegas by winning back some money she lost a long time ago, and doing so had her rolling dice and using Gloria as her good luck charm. She also has a penchant for getting involved in other people’s problems, this time those of her brother, and it included a band of half-naked men in kilts. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Her story was charming, but it only works because Julie Bowen was there to keep it classy.

Show: ‘Mom’

Actor: Allison Janney

We just can’t get enough of Allison Janney. You may know her from The West Wing, or as the step-mom from Juno, but whatever she does, she brings her own flair. As Bonnie on Mom, she proves that anything she does is magical, even playing a recovering (sometimes) alcoholic, former teen mom who lives with her daughter and grandchildren. She gets a little vulgar, a little in-your-face, and is unapologetic for her not-so-ladylike ways, and we love every minute of it.

This week’s episode had her granddaughter interviewing potential adoptive parents for their unborn child, and Bonnie played the supportive parent-type well, while also inserting her own brand of sass into the proceedings. Mom just wouldn’t be the same without Allison Janney.
