It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing a surgeon or a werewolf, a good performance is good performance, and this week’s Hypable Honors selections definitely proved that.

It’s a rough world on TV these days. Whether you’re playing a werewolf in New Orleans or a surgeon in Seattle, times are definitely hard. However, if you’re an actor on TV, there is definitely a lot of great work being done and great worlds to play in. This week’s selections for Hypable Honors probably couldn’t be much more different, but they both managed to make an impression despite going through some VERY tough times.

Make sure to let us know what you think in the comments below!

Hypable Honors

Show: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Actor: Patrick Dempsey

Since Grey’s Anatomy started nearly a decade ago, quite the feat for a network drama these days, no matter what has happened and how the stories have changed there are a few things we have always been able to count on. Bailey will always be a hard ass, surgeries will never go as planned, and Patrick Dempsey will never disappoint.

Derek Shepherd has had a rough go of it on the show. He has had successes and failures, but the tough times he has gone through, including being the primary target of a shooter in the hospital, have definitely outweighed the positives. In this week’s episode, Derek actually sunk lower than ever before. As Amelia described it, he ‘hit rock bottom,’ and it’s unclear as to how he’ll resurface. While trying to reconcile his own happiness with what is best for his family, Derek has managed to push away both.

Patrick Dempsey showed incredible depth and elegance in his scenes with Caterina Scorsone, who plays Amelia Shepherd. Their familial bond has always been strong yet unwelcome, what with her trying to make her own way in the same professional world as Derek, but this week’s episode showed just how close they can be while keeping each other at a distance. Watching the man fall apart was equally painful and remarkable, as you look into the man’s eyes and see how broken he’s become.

Whether Derek finds a way to be happy in Seattle is not for us to know yet, but trusting Shonda Rhimes to do what is right by these characters, and Derek in particular, has never been hard. She will continue to give Dempsey incredible material to work with, and he will continue to bring Derek back from the brink.

Show: ‘The Originals’

Actor: Chase Coleman

Oliver hasn’t always been the most stand-up character on The Originals. Heck, we haven’t even liked him very much half the time, but this week’s episode showed him finally standing up for what he wanted and it endeared us to him a little bit.

He may not have been playing a Mikaelson, but Chase Coleman made good use of his time on The Originals. When you step onto a supernatural drama like this one, it’s hard not to remind yourself that there’s a looming body count, and anyone is fair game. That said, Chase never seemed phased by the almost foretold end for his character. He made a serious impression on the lives of the New Orleans brood, and, when all was said and done, made an impact on more than one character.

His ferocity for protecting his own and his determination to change the dyfunctional hierarchy spelled trouble for him from the start, but Oliver never let it bring him down. No matter what horrific obstacle may have been thrown in his path, Oliver managed to sidestep them and carry on until the bitter end. We have no doubt that Jackson and Hayley will do everything in their power to avenge his death by finding peace for the werewolves in New Orleans.

We will miss seeing Chase’s Oliver on our screens every week. He always added an element of the unknown to a scene, especially when we didn’t know where his allegiances lied. From his moments romancing Rebekah to his last breaths in Jackson’s arms, Oliver had one hell of a wild ride in the Quarter, and Chase Coleman more than delivered.
