Over the weekend, Hypable writer and HeroHype co-host John Thrasher headed to New York City to take part in this weekend’s New York Comic Con! Check out John’s pictures, video and observations from the world’s biggest comic book convention!

Hey Hypable! So it’s Saturday night, and I just got back from a fun day at New York Comic Con! This was my first year not only at New York Comic Con, but at a Con at all. It was definitely a lot of fun and I highly suggest anyone who can make it to New York at this time every year to go.

I got to the Javits Center around 1pm. I was hoping to make it there a little earlier so I could get in line to meet Stan Lee, the creator of Marvel comics. But, Saturday, as some of you who have gone before may know, is definitely the busiest day of the 4-day event.

Upon arrival, there were literally thousands of people in the main concourse alone. I knew that this was going to be a huge event but I didn’t know it was going to be THAT big! I went downstairs to get my press pass, met up with my friends Johnny, Neall and Mike, and we checked it all out.

NYCC is very different from San Diego Comic Con. NYCC is very much all about comic books and comic book movies. Here and there you’ll see a Chevrolet booth, or a motion picture studio booth, but the convention really focuses on all things comics. SDCC is more of the television, movie and entertainment genres. Though some of these genres intertwine at NYCC, it seems to be a very different atmosphere.

When I finally made it to the main show floor I checked out tons of printed comics at various prices. Some comics you could buy 2 for a dollar while some rare comics had price tags of $85,000, as seen in the picture below:

They also had comics that were being sold for more than a million dollars, but they didn’t have price tags on them!

Legendary Pictures, the studio responsible for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, had a neat little booth with the original bat suit used in The Dark Knight. Obviously, being a huge Batman fan I snapped a pic:

After I snapped that picture, my friends who had already been at NYCC for a few hours before me had mentioned that they bought authentic steel Batarangs as seen in Batman Begins. My little bat ears perked up and I immediately asked them to point me in the direction to said Batarangs. Low and behold, I HAD to have them myself. They were within my budget for the day, so I went ahead and made the purchase. These things are real, dangerous and very much a sharp ninja weapon:

After browsing the main comic book floor, I made my way over to the Chevrolet booth where I not only got a free Comic Con t-shirt, but got to see a demonstration of their flying car! Yes, that’s right, a flying car! I should point out that this car was basically a blow-up car with a helicopter style undercarriage, but either way, it was pretty awesome to see a car flying around the main show floor without any strings or wires attached. Everyone stopped what they were doing to take a picture or video. Including me!

Because the lines were outrageously long, I didn’t get to check out Stan Lee, or Marvel’s The Avengers panel, but luckily we have this little thing called the internet where I can fill you in on all the details! Click here to read about The Avengers panel at NYCC!

Overall, it was a really fun day. I think in the future I will try to go and experience NYCC on the Thursday or Friday of the event. It was hard just walking around, let alone actually being able to experience the panels and speakers!
