A couple of networks have canceled new episodes of their shows that were scheduled to air due to inevitable pre-emptive local news covering Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy is affecting millions in the northeastern United States, thus local news stations in the affected areas are staying on air for extended periods to cover the weather live.

The following shows were canceled Monday night:

– CBS: How I Met Your Mother, Partners, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0
– CW: Gossip Girl, 90210
– Comedy Central: The Daily Show, The Colbert Report

The following shows were canceled Tuesday night:
– ABC: Private Practice

Though shows were canceled, TV watchers still needed content to keep them entertained. Netflix reported a bump in instant streaming usage on Sunday and Monday thanks to everyone staying indoors. On New York public radio, Elmo comforted kids by speaking about hurricane safety and answering questions from his younger viewers.

This post will stay updated with additional cancelations as they’re announced.

New York-based late night talk shows David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon recorded Monday night’s new episodes without an audience – see their respective, eerie opening monologues here and here. Other networks canceled programming last night, but there have been no further announcements about postponements this evening. We’ll keep you updated!
