Lionsgate announced this morning that music superstar Lorde will be writing The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1’s first single and organizing the film’s soundtrack.

In a press release Thursday morning, the 17-year-old artist best known for songs like “Royals” and “Team” said that The Hunger Games story is an inspiring one and wants to surprise people with her song selections.

“Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance,” said Lorde. “The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”

Lorde was lucky enough to visit the Mockingjay set to meet with director Francis Lawrence. He said in a statement, “I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film. Her immense talent and keen understanding of Mockingjay’s characters and themes not only have enabled her to create a song of her own that completely captures the film’s essence, but her insight and passion for our project make her the perfect creative force to assemble the other songs on our soundtrack. I can’t wait to share what she’s done with the fans — it is truly remarkable.”

Lionsgate released this teaser artwork today. We’d love if this is what the album’s cover actually looked like when it hits store shelves later this year:

The studio says that the partnership came together through “her unique relationship with her music publisher, SONGS Music Publishing.” No other details were shared, but today’s press release seems to indicate that Lorde has been a fan of Suzanne Collins’ work for a while.

Past Hunger Games soundtracks have included well-known artists like Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, Imagine Dragons, and Lorde herself.

Though we may never know for sure, we wonder how much control Lorde will truly have over selecting songs for the soundtrack. Will this be just another soundtrack, or will Lorde create something unique? Based on her comments for this press release, she has already finished selecting songs/artists.

At the least, this partnership will help push additional copies of the compilation.

Mockingjay hits theaters this November.
