Recent sales figures indicate that The Hunger Games‘ DVD and Blu-ray has become the top selling film of the year — so far.

Since going on sale August 18, the film has sold 5.3 million units, generating $93 million in revenue, which easily tops any other film released on DVD/Blu-ray this year. Lionsgate had a huge publicity blitz for the film’s release, which included stars appearing at various retail outlets to meet fans. In the first weekend alone it sold 3.8 million copies and outperformed a couple of the Twilight films in their weekend release sales numbers.

The film beat Breaking Dawn – Part 1 DVD/Blu-ray sales which topped out at 5.2 million.

The Hunger Games has a wide array of special features to keep fans well satisfied past simply watching the movie again. It features lengthy videos like Letters from the Rose Garden, Controlling the Games, A Conversation with Gary Ross and Levis Mitchell, and Game Maker: Suzanne Collins and the Hunger Games Phenomenon.

With The Hunger Games DVD release now behind us, all eyes are on its sequel Catching Fire, which is currently filming in Atlanta. Last week numerous photos depicting nearly the entire cast of tributes surfaced. It hits theaters November 22, 2013.
