Prim’s cat Buttercup has gone from being black and white in The Hunger Games movie to ginger in Catching Fire, meaning he is now loyal to the source material.

A new photo from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire depicts Buttercup on the lap of Katniss’ sister Prim (played by Willow Shields), and she’s very clearly gone back to being ginger like described in the trilogy by Suzanne Collins.

It’s not clear why filmmakers made the switch or what made them decide to use a black and white cat in the first place. Perhaps the first movie’s cat asked for too high a salary to appear in the sequel, or – more likely – producers decided to make the switch so the cat’s appearance is loyal to its source material. No matter what the reason, it’s a victory for fans who love when even the smaller details are accurately carried from book to screen.

For reference, here’s what he looked like in the first movie directed by Gary Ross:

In the books, Buttercup is described as being loyal to Prim and is “hideous-looking” according to Katniss. Buttercup is not a fan of Katniss because she once tried to drown him, but Katniss made some amends when she offered him food from her hunting excursions.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on November 22, and tickets for the movie are now on sale. The cast and crew are getting ready to go on a worldwide promotional tour, but currently they are filming scenes for the two Mockingjay movies. Each of the two parts will hit theaters in November 2014 and November 2015 respectively. The three remaining films are under the direction of Francis Lawrence.
