Hypable attended Hulu’s The Awesomes Comic-Con fan panel. If you’re a fan of Seth Meyers and Michael Shoemaker, you will definitely want to check the new series out.

The panel first revealed the world premiere of the first episode of the animated series which began with a battle between Prock (Seth Meyers) and Malocchio (Bill Hader). The series then flashes back to six months before where Mr. Awesome is retiring at age ninety. Prock, Mr. Awesome’s son, tries to take up the new mantle. Instead of passing the torch off to his son, Mr. Awesome passes it off to Perfect Man (Josh Meyers) who then rejects it. Prock’s attempt to take control is met with a lack of support from the media and his father. The series features the adventures of The Awesomes and Prock’s attempts to prove himself and build a new team.

The animated series is witty and should satisfy both those who love superheroes and Saturday Night Live. It is an adult comedy series that should be on your must watch list. Fans at Comic-Con seemed to love it with a loud round of applause at the end.

The panel was hosted by The Talking Dead’s Chris Hardwick and featured Seth Meyers (Prock, co-creator, and executive producer), Bobby Moynihan, Josh Meyers (Perfect Man), Kenan Thompson (Impesario), Taran Killam (Frantic), Ike Barinholtz (Muscleman), Mike Shoemaker (co-creator and executive producer), and Judd Winick (writer and consulting producer).

Meyers pointed to his and Shoemaker’s shared love of comic books from the moment they met in 2001 and praised Hulu as a great partner. Meyers thought television would have murdered the show if it had gone through the development process. Shoemaker praised the dream cast and said that the show is what they dreamed on.

Barinholtz said that the core of Muscleman was “stupidity” and that he had a lot of upper body strength. To get into character, he joked that he took a couple of rounds of steroids. “The point is that the show is super fun and that my testicles are nonexistent”.

Killam was excited to be at Comic-Con to promote the show as a big fan of Comic-Con, calling himself a fan boy. He praised the perfect combination of superheroes, cartoons, and comedy in The Awesomes as a perfect fit for him. Josh Meyers, brother of Seth Meyers, joked that Seth pitched the show to him as being a lesser character and that’s how he felt in real life. The two joked about Josh’s hair compared to Seth’s hair and how it was too cartoon like for the cartoon.

Moynihan said it had been a wonderful experience from SNL to The Awesomes with the feeling of disbelief that he’s really involved. Moynihan compared SNL to being a family that lasts forever.

Winick was on the third season of The Real World and has been a prominent comic book artist. The panel premiered the show’s trailer also during Comic-Con.

One fan asked about the transition from kid sketch shows to SNL to Killam and Thompson. Killam said they didn’t know each other that well before but that that he was a huge fan of Thompson and the “The Chocolate Show” and “Good Burger” sketches. Thompson said Nickelodeon was a great starting point, but it is hard to compare the two. On SNL, Thompson stated, “I couldn’t dream of a better job”.

When asked about possible meta-crossovers with Late Night and The Awesomes, Seth Meyers liked the idea but said it might be difficult to interview animated characters. On the women of the show, Meyers was excited for Paula Pell, Emily Spivey, and Rashida Jones to be on the show. The women were busy with filming other projects and could not attend Comic-Con.

The Awesomes stars Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, Ike Barinholtz, Taran Killam, Bobby Lee, Josh Meyers, Paula Bell, Emily Spivey, Kenan Thompson, Rachel Dratch, and Steve Higgens.

You can find the first two episodes of The Awesomes on Hulu starting August 1. The first season will consist of ten episodes and feature one episode per week.
