Andra Day stars as Billie Holiday in the first trailer for The United States vs. Billie Holiday— check it out below!

Coming up next, director Lee Daniels is set to tackle the story of legendary jazz musician Billie Holiday in the upcoming biopic, The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The film, which stars Grammy Award nominated singer Andra Day as the titular music icon, is set in the 1940s and shines a spotlight one the singer’s complicated, irrepressible life.

As the trailer shows, the film also notably highlights Holiday’s drug addiction and how the federal government sought to use that against her. Though Holiday was targeted as part of the growing effort to escalate and radicalize the war on drugs, as the film shows, the government had ulterior motives. Specifically, they sought to silence the singer and prevent her from singing one of her most controversial ballads, “Strange Fruit,” which has since gone on to become one of the singer’s most legendary songs.

In addition to unveiling the first trailer for the film, on Monday it was also announced that Hulu had acquired the streaming rights for the film, which will debut later on next month.

In a statement announcing the movie’s upcoming release, director Lee Daniels said: “Whether you are new to the story and legacy of Billie Holiday or know every note she ever sang, I do hope our celebration of this complex woman does justice to a great musical legend and civil rights activist whose artistry resonates as well today, as it did 80 years ago. Hulu releasing this film and giving it a platform to be seen nationwide is a blessing, because as recent events reveal, our country has much work to do in fulfilling its promise of a more perfect union.”
