X-Men: Days of Future Past actor Hugh Jackman has finally confirmed via a video interview that he’s officially hanging up his adamantium claws.

While we’ve pretty much known that Hugh Jackman was finished playing Wolverine when he finishes his next Wolverine film, after an Instagram image back in March hinted at his “final time,” the actor has finally confirmed without a doubt that his final film as Wolverine will be his next movie set to be released in 2017.

It’s still rumored that Jackman will be in director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse in some way, but this interview makes it sound like his final outing as Wolverine will be in 2017’s Wolverine 3 movie, which is a reportedly a direct sequel to 2013’s The Wolverine.

As X-Men: Days of Future Past basically rewrote the entire X-Men world, we’ll be curious what Wolverine 3 will even look like when it hits theaters in two years.

We’ll update the video to HD when it’s available, but until then check out the video below, and read the quote to see Jackman’s thoughts of the Wolverine character, and his 17 years playing one of the most popular superheroes to hit the big screen since X-Men started the superhero movie craze back in 2000.

“It is my last time…It just felt like it was the right time to do it,” Jackman says. “And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”

As Jackman said, it’s pretty insane that he’s been playing Wolverine for 17 years. He’s always been a fan-favorite, although sometimes splitting comic fans due to the fact that he’s never quite fit the comic character as much as some hardcore fans had hoped.

There’s also the question as to whether Fox will end up recasting Wolverine with a younger actor, as it seems they’re planning on moving forward with a new, young batch of mutants in their future films. This will be a big deal, as Jackman has played the character so long that it’s hard to even think about Wolverine without thinking of Hugh Jackman.

Either way, we imagine everyone can agree that he’s done an excellent job as Logan, and he’s essentially been the centerpiece for all the X-Men movies, where he’s starred in every single one other than X-Men: First Class, which he still had a hilarious cameo in.

X-Men: Apocalypse will feature loads of new (and young) mutants, and it should be an exciting film if Jackman is involved as Wolverine. The one good thing about his character is he doesn’t age like a normal human (even in real life) so he’s been able to join in on the fun for all the movies without looking out of place.

As for the currently untitled Wolverine 3, which will be directed by James Mangold, it will definitely star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for his final time. The movie doesn’t currently have a specific release date, but it’s set to hit theaters sometime in 2017.

Sad to hear Hugh Jackman is moving on from Wolverine, or are you ready for a new actor?
