How to Get Away with Murder is coming back for season 5! Here’s everything you need to remember from season 4.

The Keating 1

After Annalise was caught violating her probation at the end of How to Get Away with Murder season 3, it seemed inevitable that she would be disbarred. However, no matter what she’s been through, she’s still Annalise Keating. When she fought to keep her license and somehow won, it seemed like things were due to go back to normal. Well, whatever normal means for the Keating 5, anyway.

So imagine everyone’s shock when Annalise called all of her minions to a fancy restaurant to fire them! With epic recommendation letters…but still. Some took it harder than others, but they all were sent spiraling.

Bonnie, having known and worked with Annalise the longest, understandably took it the hardest. After a failed attempt at begging Annalise to take her back, she went to Denver of all people to get a job at the D.A.’s office. Nobody really ever knew if she was trying to help or destroy Annalise…probably not even Bonnie herself.

The rest of the OG Keating 5 were left to fight for internships with their high performing classmates. Despite Michaela’s claims that Annalise had completely screwed them over, she wound up with a prestigious position at Caplan and Gold, working under Tegan Price. The only downside was that she had to work alongside her arrogant classmate, Simon.

Oliver (who wasn’t even invited to Annalise’s mass firing) took a job at “I.T. and me,” but later also got hired at Caplan and Gold. Unfortunately, Connor didn’t make out so well. After failing to land an internship, Connor told his friends that he quit law school. However, he later admitted that he failed out.

Asher was also left jobless, but spent most of How to Get Away with Murder season 4 helping out his boo in whatever badass-ery she was getting into. Laurel managed to score some interviews, but opted out to focus on some more pressing matters…

Baby mama’s papa drama

You thought your family drama was complicated? In How to Get Away with Murder season 4, Laurel was pregnant with Wes’ baby, and fully confident that her father had Wes murdered! Now that would be an awkward Thanksgiving.

Luckily, Michaela and Oliver’s positions at Caplan and Gold afforded the gang the perfect opportunity to get back at Jorge Castillo. His company, Antares Technologies, was just about to go public, and the whole deal was being handled by Tegan Price.

The group devised a plan to steal Antares’ files off the C&G servers and leak some of Jorge’s criminal activity. The fact that you needed a partner’s key card to access the server was a fairly significant obstacle, though. The entire group showed up on the night of a C&G party to steal both the card and the files. They toyed with the idea of placing the blame on Simon, but when they realized he would get deported, they decided against it. They managed to get Tegan’s card, and it looked like everything was going smoothly.

Until it all went wrong, of course. This is How to Get Away with Murder, after all. When Michaela, Asher and Laurel were trying to figure out what to do with the key after they had the files, Simon walked in and sealed his own fate. He got hold of the gun Laurel had in her purse and accidentally shot himself in the head.

The group wasn’t actually guilty, but they still only told a half truth to protect Laurel, since her presence at C&G could alert her father to what she was planning. They told the police that Simon showed up with the gun and killed himself. This would’ve worked, if Simon hadn’t woken up and regained his memory. Annalise thought she had him under control, but Michaela took a dark turn and took matters into her own hands, getting Simon deported to Pakistan and letting him take the fall for stealing the files.

Later that night, Laurel had a very bloody delivery (Frank had accidentally pushed her, causing a premature birth), locked in the elevator of Annalise’s apartment. Thanks to Annalise finding them and performing CPR on little Christopher, both mom and baby survived. You’d think that would be the end of this part of the How to Get Away with Murder season 4 refresher, but it’s really only the beginning.

Jorge found out that Laurel was pregnant despite her telling him that she had an abortion and paid off a doctor to have her deemed an unfit mother, which granted him custody of the child. Annalise asked her therapist, Isaac Roa*, to perform a real evaluation, but his testimony was thrown out in court when the D.A.’s office named him as a suspect in his daughter’s murder investigation, which had been closed years prior.

*Annalise started seeing Roa as part of the terms of keeping her license. He helped her stay sober and they became close, but she “triggered” him due to the fact that she’d also lost a child. Roa was a recovering heroine addict, but all the Annalise drama caused him to relapse and eventually overdose. He survived but said he couldn’t see Annalise anymore. Bonnie also started seeing Roa under a fake name…remember that strange “I love her” scene?

Remember Dominick, Jorge’s henchman who actually killed Wes? Well, he called Laurel to warn her not to go through with her plan, and then Frank killed him while Laurel was in the hospital since he made him mad when he was trying to get information. Whoops!

Dominick’s phone had a message from Wes on it. He was the one he called the night he died. Through this, they discovered that Wes met with Laurel’s mother days before he died. She offered to pay him to stay away from Laurel. He declined, but when everything started going down and he almost turned on his friends, he called her for help. Obviously, this didn’t end well for him.

Laurel confronted her mother about this, and judging by the scratch marks on her wrists, things may have gotten more violent than How to Get Away with Murder season 4 let on. Jorge also dropped some hints that Laurel might be less stable than everyone thinks. She has her baby back, but that doesn’t mean all is well for Laurel.

Jorge got Denver murdered when the Keating 5 threatened to leak evidence linking Antares to his campaign funds (Tegan helped bring Antares down), and using that murder, Annalise tricked Jorge and he got arrested. Antares did go public, but Jorge is officially behind bars!

A class act class action

When Annalise regained the right to practice law, her first stop was the public defender’s office. There, she ended up re-trying the case of her former prison roomie, Jasmine. She ended up getting all of her records sealed due to her previous inadequate representation, and this led Annalise to realize that the public defender’s office was severely low on resources, causing many low-income offenders to serve longer sentences than lawful.

With a lot of help from Connor, Annalise put together a class action lawsuit which went all the way to the Supreme Court. One of the biggest obstacles was finding a “face case” defendant. That is, until she found out that Nate’s mentally ill father was serving an exaggerated sentence, himself.

With the help of Nate, Nate Sr., and Scandal’s Olivia Pope, Annalise stated her case to the Supreme Court and won! Now all of her defendant’s cases will be re-tried. Expect some of this to go down in How to Get Away with Murder season 5. Hopefully with Connor still by Annalise’s side since he applied to get back into law school at the end of season 4.

How to Get Away with Love

At the end of How to Get Away with Murder season 3, Oliver proposed to Connor. Connor wasn’t sure. In How to Get Away with Murder season 4, Connor proposed to Oliver. Due to all the lies Oliver had been telling regarding their work at Caplan and Gold, Oliver wasn’t sure. However, when the season ended, Coliver was stronger than ever and is planning a wedding, which will take place in season 5!

Michaela and Asher were strong for most of season 4, but when Michaela traveled to Washington with Annalise, she hooked up with Marcus, a flame from her past. Asher found out and hasn’t been able to forgive her, so things are currently up in the air.

Frank stood dutifully by Laurel’s side through all the craziness of How to Get Away with Murder season 4, vowing to care for her child as if he was his own (even before the paternity test proved that he wasn’t). They are going strong, but Laurel did tell her mother that she “killed the one person I love the most,” while referring to Wes.

Nate is as hopelessly into Annalise as ever. He tried to put distance between them while working for the D.A.’s office, but working with her on the class action surely reignited his feelings. I’d say stay tuned for a Nate and Annalise reunion early in season 5.

Bonnie started flirting with another lawyer at the D.A.’s office. He screwed her over with Roa during Laurel’s custody case, but they were weirdly still flirting at the end of the season.

Gabriel who?

Nate got his hands on those files Denver was keeping on everyone, and one of them, potentially Bonnie’s, had an interesting note inside. Between the “child alive?” sticker and Frank scoping out Gabriel Maddox at Middleton’s new student orientation, it looks like there might be more baby mama drama in season 5. Rome Flynn, who plays Gabriel, has been promoted to a series regular for How to Get Away with Murder season 5, so it seems likely!
