How to Get Away With Murder has just one episode left until its mid-season hiatus, and last week the show dropped a bombshell –or did it?

By now we should all be used to the fact that nothing is ever as it seems on How to Get Away With Murder. In last week’s episode we had several twists, but the reality is that we could all be being played.

During the final moments of last week’s episode, we were all certainly led to believe that the killer of Mr. and Mrs. Hapstall and/or Mr. Hapstall’s sister was none other than Catherine Hapstall, with the aid of her cousin Philip. Wes found evidence that Catherine had given one of her portraits to Philip, which meant Wes caught Catherine in a lie. Catherine had previously claimed that she didn’t know Phillip. Additionally, we witnessed Catherine and Philip in a car together conspiring, which validated Wes’ information.

We also had an interesting turn of events with Michaela and Caleb Hapstall. Caleb and Michaela finally act on their long-simmering attraction, and because nothing says, “Baby, I’m really into you,” like a confession, Caleb reveals a secret to Michaela. He found a gun that had been hidden in an air duct in Catherine’s studio. We don’t yet know if the gun is the same one that was used to kill Caleb’s parents and aunt, but it’s certainly being implied that is what the gun was used for.

Taking all of this “evidence” into account, we aren’t quite ready to declare Catherine and Philip guilty. It all seems just a little too neat. We are wondering if the opposite is true. Is Caleb actually the mastermind behind it all, and Catherine and Philip are innocent bystanders, or perhaps unwitting pawns.

Also, keep in mind that these revelations haven’t given us one iota of clear evidence about what happened to Annalise and Emily Skinner. All season long we’ve been seeing flashforwards of Annalise bleeding out on the floor of the Hapstall mansion, and A.D.A. Emily Sinclair just as dead on another floor. We know that four out of the Keating Five (Connor, Wes, Laurel, and Michaela) are at the mansion when the blood bath goes down. We also know that Bonnie seems to drop Emily’s dead or unconscious body from a height of several stories.

The only Hapstall we have seen in the flashforwards is Catherine. She was deposited (either drugged or knocked out) on the mansion grounds by Frank. This begs the question, “Where are Caleb and Phillip?” Michaela, in all the flashforwards, doesn’t bring up Caleb’s name once. This seems to us that this may be a big clue. Michaela has horrible taste in men. She seems to be a pathological liar magnet. Was Caleb just one more bad choice? Is this why Michaela isn’t frantically asking the other students to search for her boyfriend, or why we don’t see his body along with Catherine’s?

Once we put all of the above together, we have our new crack theory: Caleb and Philip were working together, and they were in a relationship together. Once they collected all the money from the insurance settlement and will, they were going to kill Catherine and make it look like a suicide. Someone, namely Annalise and Emily, was on to them, they were attacked, and now Caleb and Philip are on the run.

We’ll find out if our theory is correct this Thursday at 10 p.m. on the mid-season finale of How to get Away With Murder.

What’s your ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ crack theory?
