Following the character’s Guardians of the Galaxy cameo, Marvel is planning to release new Howard the Duck comic books!

When Howard the Duck popped up in the post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy, theaters across America went wild: the cult favourite comic book character has been out of the spotlight for a while, but totally fit the movie’s nostalgic, 1980s-era feel.

Marvel movies’ post-credits scenes are always highly anticipated: Captain America: The First Avenger brought us the first look at The Avengers – and in turn, Avengers‘ own post-credits shawarma extravaganza is one of the most beloved scenes from the film.

Turns out Marvel used Guardians of the Galaxy to tease the return of Howard the Duck (and/or remind modern audiences that he existed) – but not, as many assumed, as a movie franchise.

Most people probably remember lewd alien investigator Howard the Duck from the so-bad-it’s-bad movie released in 1986, which starred Lea Thompson and Tim Robbins. But clearly enough time has now passed that we can feel nostalgic about the character, and disassociate the new comics from the film.

The first comic book in the new series will be released on March 4, 2015. “Howard the Duck #1” is created by Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones (the original writers were Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik), and the story will see Howard working as a Private Investigator within the Marvel universe – promising many intriguing crossovers.

Entertainment Weekly first broke the news, along with some concept art and a lengthy interview with the revival comic creators.

The pair reveals that there’ll be lots of sci-fi and comedy, with “a lot of visual gags throughout.”

Ultimately, we can expect Howard the Duck to be a field trip through the Marvel universe, as seen through the eyes of “a very short tour guide.”

Do you think Marvel will eventually try to spin a new movie franchise off the comic books, or will they be sticking to comics for this particular character?
