Spoiler Warning!

Alyssa Barbieri of TMI Source brings up an interesting consideration regarding The Mortal Instruments films – How will people react to the seemingly incestuous relationship of Clary and Jace at the end of the first book/movie?

For fans of the book series, we can just sit back and relax while our unenlightened comrades gasp in horror.  After all, the sexual tension between the two characters is, at times, so bloated it could be popped with a pin.  So to reveal that they’re actually related could mean that it will drive thousands of casual moviegoers away from the series permanently.  But Barbieri sees a potentially different outcome:

“The incest issue might actually work to the film’s advantage. As human beings we are all curious as to the happenings of others around us, same as with movies. An audience might be more prone to return for a sequel when the first film is posed with some controversy.”

My guess is that the casual moviegoer will instantly pull out her smartphone and type “Are Clary and Jace really related?” into their Google app.  They’ll see, of course, that the pair are not truly brother and sister, and they can go on rooting for the couple to be together.  Google – 1, Hollywood – 0.
