How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!

Checking out the new TV pilots – Marama Whyte

Pilot season approaches, and as I have a cozy weekend away planned I can’t think of a better time to check out some of these upcoming shows. After my Scandal binge last week, I am especially looking forward to How to Get Away with Murder fixing my Shonda Rhimes soap opera cravings. Galavant (which looks so terrible it is amazing) and Selfie (which looks just plain terrible) are also on my list, as well as A to Z and Manhattan Love Story.

Attending Chicago Comic Con – Danielle Zimmerman

This weekend I’ll be attending Chicago Comic Con for the very first time! For those of you keeping score at home, this will be my second convention EVER. I’ll be going both as press for Hypable and as a total and complete fangirl who will want to buy everything in sight. Every year, I always hear great things about WizCon (which is what we call it in these parts) and so I’m really excited to finally be going this year. Not only do I plan on spending a lot of time in the exhibitor and artist aisles, but I’m also planning on attending quite a few panels, including the ones for Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men. I’ll be there Friday afternoon (today) through Sunday, so if any Hypable readers are around and want to meet up just tweet me (or look for the overly-excited twenty-something brunette wearing either a Ron Weasley shirt, Team Mars shirt, or full Captain America getup)!

Watching ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ and ‘Locke’ – Louie Schuth

This weekend I will be watching two movies I’ve been waiting all year to see that sadly never made it anywhere near me during their respective theatrical runs. The first is the Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton starrer Only Lovers Left Alive, a film about two vampire lovers. The film gained high critical acclaim for both Hiddleston and Swinton’s performances as well as Jim Jarmusch’s offbeat writing and direction. The second film is Locke, a film that stars Tom Hardy. Most of the film features Hardy driving a car, and his performance is said to be as powerful as all that alone screen time demands.

Finishing ‘The Maze Runner’ – Tariq Kyle

I started this book ages ago but I put it down for a multitude of reasons. Now with the movie coming out and such a positive review from Comic-Con I decided to finish the book before the movie comes out. I put it down because I was getting bored, but I’m hoping that changes when I pick I back up!

Fandom Google Hangouts – Laura Byrne Cristiano

The weekend is all about the Saturday and Sunday fandom love. Doctor Who is finally back and airs at 8:00pm followed immediately by my newest obsession, Outlander at 9:00pm. Even better on Sunday, I’m going to be on two separate live Google Hangouts obsessing about these fandoms with my co-hosts from WhoHype and Talkin’ Outlander. Join along with the fun at 2:30pm for WhoHype and 4:00pm for Talkin’ Outlander right here on Hypable.

Watching ‘The Simpsons’ almost non-stop – Jimmy Bean

You may have heard about this little show called The Simpsons. Don’t worry if you haven’t, it’s pretty obscure. FXX is currently in the process of airing all billion episodes in a row, and I plan on keeping the TV on through the entire weekend to absorb those earlier (better) seasons as much as possible. Maybe I’ll get some work done during commercial breaks, but with all of this glorious yellow programming on TV, I may find it hard to find time to brush my teeth.

Seeing ‘What If’ – Christine Cannon

This weekend I’m going to see What If with some of my friends. I’m a total sucker for rom-coms but it’s the cast that really got me with this one. I’m a long time Daniel Radcliffe fan and I can’t wait to see him as a character completely different than Harry Potter. I’ve also been enamored with the adorable Zoe Kazan ever since seeing her in happythankyoumoreplease. If that doesn’t convince everyone to see it then you should check out Brittany’s interview with them and try not to fall in love.

Seeing the stage show of ‘Les Miserables’… again – Natalie Fisher

This weekend I’m flying to Melbourne to see the brand-new, full-scale production of Les Miserables. To say I’m obsessed with this musical would be an understatement – you could even call it my “first fandom” – it’s the first fictional story that I remember really having a huge emotional impact on me, right from childhood. It’s certainly one of the world’s most beloved musicals, but the 2012 Tom Hooper film adaptation has led to a massive wave of current interest, resulting in the stage show’s return to Broadway and to theatres around the world. This weekend will be my fifth time seeing the musical in the past 18 months – twice in London last year, twice in New York earlier this year, and now I’m checking out what the Aussie cast can do, along with viewing the special Les Mis exhibition in Melbourne, which includes Victor Hugo’s handwritten manuscript of the ridiculously long novel. As I mentioned, obsessed is an understatement – I have a tattoo from the original French text – and I’ve just found out that the Australian production will travel to my hometown of Sydney next year… looks like I’ll be seeing it a few more times.

Watching ‘Doctor Who’ – Jen Lamoureux

This weekend is the return of Doctor Who which will see a brand new Doctor at the helm. I may have been binge watching Doctor Who all this week in preparation for Peter Capaldi. I will also be doing a Google Hangout with the staff of WhoHype on Sunday. After our week of Doctor Who, I am really excited to see the new incarnation of the Doctor. In between my binge watching I may squeeze in a book or two.

Seeing ‘If I Stay’ – Kristen Kranz

I, like many other avid readers, will be checking out Chloe Grace Moretz and Jamie Blackley in the If I Stay adaptation as it hits theaters this weekend. I fell in love with the story first as an audiobook, and I cannot wait to see it come to life on screen. I’m most anxious to know if this story will find the same audience that The Fault in Our Stars did back in June, and be an overwhelming August box office success. Yes, I will be going all by myself, and yes, tissues will be at the ready. Mia and Adam wormed their way into my heart, and now I’m desperate to experience their story in a whole new way.
