How We Hype is a twice-monthly feature on Hypable where we tell you what we’re doing in fandom over the weekend!

Attending the Chicago stop of Margaret Stohl’s ‘Black Widow: Forever Red’ tour – Danielle Zimmerman

Guys, I am so excited. Tonight, I’m going to Margaret Stohl’s book event for Black Widow: Forever Red (which I’m dying to read). Not only will Margaret Stohl be there, but Lorraine Sink (host of Marvel’s “The Watcher”) and Marguerite Bennett (writer of Marvel’s A-Force series and DC Bombshells, both of which I LOVE) will be there, and they’ll all be doing a #WomenOfMarvel panel.

I’ve followed/loved these ladies and the Women of Marvel in general for a while now but have never had the chance to meet them, let alone see them live. But, tonight, I will be doing exactly that. I can’t wait! (Now, I just have to decide if I want to don my full on USO girl costume for the event. The event says to come in cosplay…) As always, if you’ll be there, tweet me!

Heading to Geeksboro – Karen Rought

It’s hard moving to a new city and having to find new friends, learn the lay of the land, and discover new hangouts. Luckily, it wasn’t long after moving to North Carolina that my roomie (Kristen Kranz) and I met up with a friend at a place called Geeksboro. It’s a locally owned cafe with a geek theme — a Death Star disco ball, a TARDIS to house the electronic equipment, and tip jars that force you to choose between Gryffindor and Slytherin or fantasy and sci-fi.

Best yet, they let you hang out all day and play board games for free — and you can either bring your own, or pull from their extensive library. We usually go on Saturdays, which means they loop old cartoons on a big screen at the front of the shop. After one long month away from home, I’m ready to get back into my routine, grab a large iced caramel macchiato, and play games for a solid six hours.

Finally seeing ‘The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials’ – Kristen Kranz

So, loyalty to my roommate has kept me from going to see The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials without her (she was in NYC meeting and interviewing celebrities at NYCC), but now that she’s home and we’ve done our grown up duties, it’s finally time.

I can’t wait to see Dylan O’Brien light up the screen again as Thomas, as well as see all the old favorites from the first movie including Minho, Newt, and Theresa. We were lucky enough to be invited to see the first half hour of the movie at San Diego Comic Con this summer, but now it’s finally time to see the rest. I fell in love with Scorch Trials while reading the book, and I’m anxious to see how Wes Ball envisioned the desert landscape that is the Scorch.

Reading ‘Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda’ – Andrew Sims

I love reading gay fiction, and now that I’m without a new Jay Bell book to read (hey Jay!) I’m reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. I picked this one up after hearing about it from a friend, and so far I’m loving it.

It follows two guys who are both in the closet at the same high school. Guess what? They’re also not out to each other (they communicate over e-mail using fake names). With loads of references to Harry Potter, and even a Chick Fil A shoutout (yes, I see the irony here), this is one book I’m a big fan of. Pop culture references aside, Simon is a wonderful character who is honest with the reader, making for a very intimate and relatable story.

Playing ‘Lollipop Chainsaw’ – Selina Wilken

I’ve had a pretty insane few weeks, attending the British Film Festival in London and watching tons of movies, covering red carpets, doing interviews, and writing reviews. Honestly, I don’t want to as much as look at a screen this weekend, especially since I’m gearing up for an Imagine Dragons concert on Monday. But we’re doing How We Hype, so I kind of feel obliged to think of something fandom-related.

Luckily I’ve got the PS3 game Lollipop Chainsaw lying around, and I could actually really use some gratuitous zombie-slashing violence right now. The game was made by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn, and is a perfect blend of his own trademark humor and that inescapable Buffy vibe (I mean… it’s a high school cheerleader who comes from a family of zombie hunters, come on). Who needs fresh air, right?

Seeing ‘Steve Jobs’ – Brittany Lovely

Steve Jobs, the man, is a mystery to me. I have an iPhone in my hand most hours of the day and when I am not scrolling through what I missed on Instagram I am furiously typing away on my MacBook. I am forever indebted, for better or worse, to the Apple brand.

That being said, I am not truly interested in the man behind the trademark apple. I am, however, a huge fan of Aaron Sorkin’s writing and Michael Fassbender’s face. I’m not looking for Steve Jobs to blow my mind and be the tell-all story upon which I base my judgement of the man. If it is half as entertaining as the previews, I’ll be satisfied.
