There’s only one way to describe tonight’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder: The plot thickens. A plethora of pieces have moved in the chess game that is How to Get Away with Murder season 2.

Start with a dose of future tension…

We get a glimpse into more of what happened the night Annalise was shot. We see Connor (what? why Connor of all of the Keating Five?) reiterating, “This is your fault” over and over again while looking down at Annalise and trying to stop her bleeding.

We were also shown that Annalise is not the only dead/dying person looming ahead. The D.A. who we saw making Annalise’s life a living hell for the majority of the episode is also dead that night. It may be hard to recognize her, what with all the blood marring her face, but it’s definitely Emily Sinclair, which just thickens the plot a little more.

Toss in a sprinkle of future trouble…

Michaela and Connor happen upon a very attractive guy in the hallway outside the courtroom, and when Michaela turns the guy down, Connor gives her crap about it. We later see her out with the guy, and it isn’t until then that we see the shoe drop. Wes looks through a box of Rebecca’s old stuff that the landlord is throwing away, and there’s a picture of her with a group of friends. Directly to her right in the picture is the same guy that asked out Michaela. Coincidence? I think not. Eggs 911? A definite possibility.

Just a dab of developing chaos…

The case of the Hapstall siblings just keeps getting harder and harder to pin down. Just when it looks like you can finally confirm that these two are responsible for not only the murder of their parents, but their aunt as well, things get turned out their heads right in front of us.

The police have some pretty damning evidence against Caleb in the investigation into his aunt’s murder. They found his prints in the car. When Caleb insists that he wasn’t there and isn’t the killer, Bonnie and Annalise are careful not to trust him, but also take care not to believe they know everything either. Wes plays his game of teddy bear to get Catherine to talk and when you add in the evidence falsified by the police, the Hapstalls have won this battle, just not the war.

Add a bit of unexpected relief…

Oliver and Connor have a bit of a tiff when Oliver finds out that Connor told all of the Keating Five about his HIV status. It’s totally reasonable that Oliver wants his private life kept private, and Connor sees that, so, before the episode is over, we see Connor ask for the truth. He wants the painful truth of how Oliver became HIV positive. Oliver breaks all our hearts when he tells Connor that it happened after Connor cheated and Oliver was in a horrible place. His drunken self slept with a stranger who he wouldn’t recognize if he passed them on the street.

And stir until Annalise breaks.

Emily Sinclair, the D.A. prosecuting Nate Lahey’s case, makes Annalise’s life a living hell in the courtroom. We watch her belittle and besmirch the name of Keating in every way possible. She tries to discredit her by accusing her of colluding with Eve Rothlow to cover up Sam’s murder. She calls her up to the stand and berates her until Annalise snaps and starts ranting in one of the greatest moments on the show so far about how Ms. Sinclair has been on a witchhunt this whole time. (Trust us, you’ll want to see this part again.)

Things get really bad for Annalise when Eve Rothlow, her friend and Nate’s legal counsel, decides that the best defense is having a good offense and pins everything on Annalise in court. The only way to clear Nate’s name without forcing Nate to lie on the stand was to make it look like Annalise planted Nate’s fingerprint on Sam’s ring (which she did) to cover up the true murderer. Eve seems to take it further than just looking out for her client though, and Annalise steps away shaken.

The judge in Nate Lahey’s case dismisses the hearing, concluding that there wasn’t enough evidence to bring charges against him for Sam’s murder. You can put that in the victory column.

Make sure to top it off with a lot of sexual tension.

Later that night, Eve comes to Annalise to find out how mad she is about what Eve did to her on the stand. Annalise reveals that the only reason she’s angry is because Rothlow made it personal. She went after Annalise’s soft spot. Eve gives an passionate speech about never moving on from Annalise, which is touching but not nearly as powerful as the address Ms. Keating gave in the courtroom, and Annalise gives her peace by telling her that she’s one of the best things to ever happen to her. And then they make out.

Oh, and one more thing…

Watching Frank put Laurel in her place was incredibly satisfying. It’s easy to forget that despite the fact that we know Frank killed Lyla for Sam, he’s still a person, and no person should be used in a way that makes them feel cheap. Laurel was totally there for a booty call, but Frank had other plans.
