Last night on How to Get Away With Murder season 1, episode 5 we really got to know Laurel. Read our full recap of the episode here.

This week’s episode of How to Get Away With Murder begins in class and Annalise just so happens to only be calling on the same students, like always. At the end of the lesson Wes comes up to her to talk about the cell phone but Annalise wants no part of it. With the mention of the phone we get a flashback to the night of Penisgate. Sam admits to having sex with Lila “6, 7 times” but insists that was all it was and none of his feelings were involved. This leads to a huge fight and Annalise reveals that she was his mistress before so she shouldn’t be surprised. She tells Sam he has to sleep on the couch and we can see that Bonnie is listening from downstairs.

Oh Bonnie, you think you’re so stealthy but in reality Annalise realizes it was you who ratted on Nate to his captain. After a night of drinking we see Annalise head over to Nate’s who now wants nothing to do with her because he thinks she’s the one who told his captain about them. Plus she’s been “sleeping next to a killer.”

It wouldn’t be How to Get Away With Murder without any flash forwards and this time we find out that the reason Frank was calling Laurel the night of the murder was because they slept together. She also mentions that she is now a murderer, which caught us off guard. Does this mean they actually killed Sam or is she just using that term because she’s helping get rid of the body? After they burn the body Laurel heads over to Frank’s apartment and shows him the murder weapon. Despite telling everyone that she wouldn’t say anything to Frank, she needs his advice on what to do with the statue.

Back in present time, Murder Inc is helping Annalise when she takes on the case of a teenage boy who shot his father (who was a police officer) in order to stop him from abusing his mother. This episode’s case of the week is all about the jurors so we are shown Annalise and the opposing lawyer going through and selecting their jury after asking a series of questions. Are there any lawyers out there that confirm that this is actually what happens?

The whole time the case looks like it is going in their favor but the opposing lawyer proves to everyone that this was a premeditated murder and not an incident of self-defense. It’s doesn’t matter, however, as the case ultimately becomes a mistrial after Frank catches Laurel handing one of the jury members a paper about jury nullification. Laurel is upset that Frank never mentioned her name when speaking with Annalise and it leads to quite the heated argument. The tension is too much to handle and the two just end up all tongue-tied. Literally. She then storms out and immediately heads to jump her boyfriend’s bones. We do have to say that this is the most personality we’ve gotten out of Laurel since the show premiered, though our jury is still out on her.

Annalise arranges for Sam to give Rebecca a fake psych evaluation in order to figure out if she knows anything about his and Lila’s affair. They think they’re in the clear but we later find out that Rebecca recognized the bathroom wallpaper from the nude picture on Lila’s phone. The episode ends with Rebecca completely skipping town which leads Wes to sneak into Annalise’s house and figure out that Sam is Mr. Darcy.

With each week we’re getting more and more insight into Sam’s murder and while we weren’t sold on it in the beginning we’re really starting to want to figure it out now. They keep teasing us we we’re wondering if this will go on all season or for just half of it. We’ve also been enjoying the character-centric episodes, even when it is about Laurel. Is anyone left besides Asher? That’s one backstory we’ve been looking forward to.

Laurel is definitely not our favorite character but it was still another solid episode of How to Get Away With Murder.
