How to Get Away With Murder’s Karla Souza answered some of our questions about what’s in store for her character, Laurel Castillo.

We were lucky enough to speak with the amazing Karla Souza from ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder about how her character has been developed and where she thinks her relationship with Frank is headed next.

I firstly wanted to say congratulations on all the success that How to Get Away With Murder has had! It must have been a crazy ride.

Karla Souza (KS): Thank you so much! I feel so blessed and we’re all so humbled by everyone’s reactions. I’m just riding the wave! You know, with this career in Hollywood you can be at the top at one moment and the next you never know, so I’m enjoying every moment of it. We can only hope to keep doing our jobs and every day I’m thankful for what we have.

As for your character, Laurel, I feel like the audience wasn’t really sure what to make of her in the beginning. Now we’ve come to realize that she’s more than just a student looking for attention. How did you originally approach this role? Were you given any background or have you just been going script by script?

KS: It’s actually interesting because the last episode we saw that Laurel came from quite a wealthy family. Something I’ve been talking about with [executive producer] Pete Norwalk since before the pilot is that Laurel, visually speaking, wouldn’t have a wardrobe that would tell you she came from money. It’s quite the contrast from Michaela, who sort of throws all the brands in your face and then actually ended up being from a lower class background. Because of that, Laurel has been someone who could be underestimated and she was timid and sort of idealist at first. She wasn’t really comfortable in the group because she was first labeled as Frank’s girl and wasn’t there for her own merit. That was sort of uncomfortable for her at first. But once she realized who she was, that’s when she became much more confident and pragmatic. Now she’s become a step ahead of everyone, like in the last episode she was the first person to think about Connor’s car — something even Annalise didn’t even think of.

It’s a very interesting character. She’s really been given a 180 and so she’s definitely surprised me in that way, so I’m sort of just playing it as episodes are thrown at me. She’s definitely a very complex character that I enjoy playing.

What can you tell us about Laurel’s background and her family? Will we be seeing more of your family in the upcoming episodes or even next season?

KS: Yeah, I mean, I’d LOVE to tell you if we’ll be seeing them but I can’t! What I can tell you is that we were all very shocked to see how Twitter went crazy when Laurel started speaking Spanish in the last episode. I think people are accustomed to seeing a Latin person being played by someone who can’t speak Spanish in real life, so it’s been great to have that authenticity on the show. When I first got the scene, I remember it was completely in English and I sort of pushed Pete to include some Spanish. He was able to figure out a way of organically putting in some broken Spanish in the conversation.

Originally Laurel wasn’t supposed to be Latin, but when they cast me they asked if I wanted her to be Latin. I said “yes,” but I wanted to make sure that people didn’t automatically know she was Latin from the get-go. I didn’t want her to be a stereotype or pigeon-holed as a character. That’s not who she is; she’s not a stereotype for how Latin’s are typically portrayed on television. I was happy to have that information revealed slowly like how it happens in real life.

A lot of Laurel’s story has to do with Frank. How do you see that relationship progressing?

KS: I actually am so pleased that the relationship is no longer only physical. The physical aspect we had right away. You know, it’s there, it’s sexy and exciting, but as an actor I definitely enjoy now seeing Laurel have sort of the upper hand. As the relationship deepens, it’s now the meeting of the minds. I find that very sexy, personally. Sort of having these moments of flirting, like when she told Frank about the car and then he denied having anything to do with it disappearing. They’ve gotten past that sort of lying and now they’re depending on each other since they have bigger fish to fry at the moment. So who knows where that’s going to take us, but the next episodes are extremely revealing about both characters. I don’t think that it’s going to end here; I think there’a lot more space to grow for them.

I know that they keep you pretty tight-lipped, but is there anything you can tease for us about the next couple of episodes?

KS: Yes! So there’s a clue that they will find in the woods that will lead to someone being arrested. That is definitely crazy! Crazy, crazy, crazy! There’s also the question as to whether or not it was Sam’s body that they found in the landfill. Finally, I can tell you that the group will struggle with knowing if they can trust Annalise or not. You think she’s there to protect us, but is she really?
