What is resistance? This is the question author Maureen Johnson answers in her essay introducing an all-star collection about activism called How I Resist.

This collection of essays, songs, illustrations, and interviews will provide hope for a new generation of people facing the atrocities of the world. With names like Jason Reynolds, Jodi Picoult, Libba Bray, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Alex Gino, Malinda Lo, Javier Muñoz, Dana Schwartz, Jonny Sun, Sabaa Tahir, and many, many more, you just can’t go wrong.

Each of these contributions was compiled and edited by Truly Devious author Maureen Johnson, who wrote an introduction to the collection with her own essay, titled “What Is Resistance?” You can read it in full below:

It’s important to note that How I Resist is meant for young adults, but by no means does it exclude those both younger or older. In today’s turbulent world, it’s vital to remember that there is hope for a brighter future — if we’re all willing to work for it.

And therein lies the premise of this collection. Each contribution, whether personal, poignant, or peculiar, works to show the reader that they are capable of changing the world. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, this collection will provide plenty of material to start a conversation and get those gears turning in your head.

And if you weren’t already convinced that How I Resist is worth your time, please note that all of the contributors, including Johnson, have pledged the full advance of $50,000 to the ACLU.

This, folks, is how you use your power for good.
