In a new interview, How I Met Your Mother showrunner Craig Thomas comments on the uncertainty about whether the show will have a ninth season, and also teases some exciting season 8 developments! Beware of spoilers.

Speaking to EW, Craig Thomas says that while nothing has yet been decided, they are optimistic that they will be told the show’s fate with enough time to end the show properly with season 8 if they have to.

While they have got a plan for both the renewal and cancellation scenarios, Thomas confesses that, “We’d love to keep going. We think there’s a great season 9, and we’re excited and hopeful to hear how all the negotiations go.”

As for season 8, Thomas also reveals that the premiere episode will take us back to Barney and Robin’s wedding day to give us the “hugest glimpse” of the show’s endgame. “I hope the fans will feel they have part of the answer about how the series ends and all new questions,” he teases.

Speaking to Vulture, Thomas further reveals:

It’s cloudy with a chance of yellow in the season premiere. There’s a genuine gasp moment in the premiere of season eight, where I think the fans will be on the floor about what we’re showing them.

Speaking about what else we can expect, Thomas says, “There are crazy fantasies, crazy flashforwards, and a true HIMYM, insane, hilarious episode.”

And finally, True Blood‘s Joe Manganiello will also be returning. TV Line reports that Brad will return for two episodes, after we last saw him being punched in the face by Barney when he took Robin out on a date.
