How I Met Your Mother is bringing in Saturday Night Live alum Abby Elliott in season 8, to play the craziest girl the gang has ever met.

Update: More information about her role has been revealed.

EW reports that Elliott, who announced her SNL departure last month after four years on the show, will join How I Met Your Mother for a memorable arc in season 8.

Showrunner Craig Thomas has commented on the casting, saying, “We’re thrilled to have the hilarious Abby Elliott joining us in an arc as Janeane, the craziest girl the HIMYM gang has ever encountered.”

It seems the character will have a special connection to one member of the gang. Thomas teases, “The strange, inexplicable phenomenon is: the crazier Janeane gets, the more attractive one of the gang finds her. It doesn’t end well.”

Do you think Barney’s crazy-hot scale has met its match? Or is it Ted who will fall for Janeane in season 8?

Aside from her memorable turns as Anna Faris and Angeline Jolie on Saturday Night Live, the comedienne has also appeared in No Strings Attached and High Road.

How I Met Your Mother fans might also appreciate the fact that Abby Elliott is the daughter of Chris Elliott, who plays Lily’s father on the show.

How I Met Your Mother begins its eighth season on September 24, and Elliott is expected to make her debut in early 2013.

Further, TV Line has speculated that Elliott will be playing Ted’s love interest, based on the fact that the producers have revealed that after breaking up with Victoria (whose arc will last a few episodes), he’ll have a “turbulent romance.” Showrunner Craig Thomas has stated that, “Ted will date at least one more person before he meets the mother, and it’ll be very interesting and chaotic.” Definitely sounds like Elliott’s crazy girl character fits the bill!
