Following Monday’s How I Met Your Mother premiere, the showrunners have talked about the episode which marked the beginning of the end.

Carter Bays and Craig Thomas spoke to EW about the premiere episode, in which we saw the moment right before Ted finally meets the mother.

Although there is no definitive word on whether the show will get a ninth season, Thomas says that, “We really feel like this launches the last season.” Of course, this is the attitude they have going into every season, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that we won’t get Ted and the gang for another year.

However, the writers are adamant that they won’t pull a The Office and bring the show back without some of its stars. “It’s a family, and we’re finishing this thing together,” Thomas says.

They also tease the return of Robin Sparkles. Thomas says, “We have a way to [bring her back] that I think would be completely different from the other ways we’ve done it.”

Speaking to TV Guide, Thomas addresses the moment when Ted meets the mother. “It’s just one of those moments that gives us a chill here, and we hope it gives the audience a chill,” he says. “It’s the finish line of our series. There’s something just mind-blowing about that — seeing Ted just be 15 feet away from the love of his life.”

On Barney/Robin, he says that, “I think we have a way to get Barney and Robin back together that is really fun and really appropriate. They get married, so someone’s gotta propose to someone.” As for their actual wedding day, it’s “one of the biggest and craziest in the history of this group. Ted has been through an emotional roller coaster that day.”

Barney and Robin’s wedding day is one of the biggest and craziest in the history of this group. Ted has been through an emotional roller coaster that day. He’s having a very pensive moment, sitting there in the rain, going over the craziness of the day.

He also says that we should get really excited for season 8, as “everything that happens will have significance and will be leading us toward that moment” where Ted meets Mother. And, “we will see some of the future that happens after that moment. I don’t want to say exactly where the series will end and how far we’ll get past it, but it’s exciting.”
