Most of us are used to Eli Roth’s signature brand of over-the-top, gory horror, but in the trailer for The House with a Clock in its Walls, he’s exploring a more whimsical, family-friendly brand of spooky.
Eli Roth might be known for his work on intense, occasionally hard-to-watch horror movies like Hostel, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Green Inferno, but he’s trying something new in The House with a Clock in its Walls. Based on the novel written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in its Walls is a fun, spooky adventure that the entire family can enjoy.
It’s definitely not what we expect from an Eli Roth flick, but after watching the trailer, we’re pretty excited to see what adventures are in store for us in this movie. Plus, with the screenplay written by Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless, Revolution), this has the makings of a pretty wonderful, kid-friendly “haunted house” flick.
The House with a Clock in its Walls is the story of a young boy, Lewis Barnavelt, who goes to live with his mysterious uncle Jonathan Barnavelt after the death of his parents. Lewis soon discovers that his uncle is a warlock and that there is a whole, wide world of magic outside the confines of his uncle’s home. When Lewis learns of a clock created by an evil wizard that is meant to bring about the apocalypse hidden in the walls of his home, Lewis and Jonathan must find the clock before it can fall into the wrong hands, or worse, time could run out.
And while we’re very surprised to see director Eli Roth break from his usual style, we’re also really pumped about the movie. Not only is the source material great, but there is an amazing cast bringing Bellairs’ book to life. The House with a Clock in its Walls stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Kyle McLachlan.
