Beloved Netflix political drama House of Cards may say farewell after season 2 because of Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright’s preference to do movies.

The comments came from House of Cards executive producer Rick Cleveland in an interview with Gold Derby. “‘House of Cards’ is only going to go a second season and I think that’s it,” he told the awards site before adding that “Kevin Spacey likes to do movies and Robin Wright likes to do movies.”

For actors, committing to a television show is a major time commitment because shooting a full season takes months on end. Additional House of Cards seasons would take up a lot of time for Space and Wright – the shows two lead stars – who evidently prefer movies over television. For example, this most recent season of House of Cards began shooting in April and they are currently at work on the season finale.

Though we know very little about House of Cards season 2, we do know that Jodie Foster is directing an episode. She also directed an episode of another Netflix original, Orange is the New Black. House of Cards executive producer David Fincher did not return to the series, so some of the directing work for season 2 has been handled by Spacey and Wright.

House of Cards is expected to premiere in early 2014. All episodes will likely premiere at the same time like Netflix has done for all of its original series. With an established fan base now in tact, new seasons will surely gain a huge amount of interest from fans and media leading up to “opening day.”

There’s always the chance Spacey and Wright change their mind about the future of the show if Netflix offers them enough money to commit to more. On the other hand, if Spacey’s character becomes president in season 2, the show may end at an appropriate point.
