Even though House of Cards season 2 debuted three months ago, and they finished filming even further back, co-star Michael Kelly still doesn’t know what the future holds for his character.

Kelly plays Doug Stamper, who is Frank Underwood’s Chief of Staff, in the Netflix original series. He was potentially killed by Rachel Posner after chasing her into the woods.

Speaking to the Huffington Post, Kelly revealed that he knows nothing about Doug’s chances of survival. “I don’t know — they haven’t officially said [whether I’m returning],” he said.

“And with television contracts, as an actor, when you sign those contracts you sign for a long time. So technically they still own me, but I don’t know yet.”

Kelly has tried to find out, he says. “I’ve tried a lot [to find out], are you kidding me? I wanna know! You go to the writers’ room and there’s black tarps over everything. You don’t get to know anything.”

He also remains hopeful. “It’s my best job I’ve ever had and the greatest people I’ve ever worked with. We can be hopeful but if not, it was an incredible job.”

You would think that while they were filming the House of Cards season 2 finale Kelly would’ve asked around to find out exactly what his future holds. Do showrunners not know yet either? Doug is obviously an important part of Frank’s cabinet, so we’d like to see him stick around. On the other hand, it’d be interesting to see who Frank would place into the role if Doug is indeed dead.

House of Cards is expected to premiere in early 2015. It was renewed for season 3 on February 4 – just days before season 2 premiered on Netflix over Valentine’s Day weekend.
