‘It Follows’

Director David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 breakout hit It Follows is a sharp and unsettling nightmare that preys on teenage anxieties. The premise is simple: after sleeping with a new boyfriend, Jay finds she has received a curse that follows her, in the form of friends or strangers, until she dies or passes it on.

The film uses a variety of visual tricks, jump scares, and haunting long shots to create a disturbing and increasingly horrifying world where danger and death lurk everywhere. It’s the perfect movie to watch late at night with friends, full of great tension and horrific imagery that creates a memorable horror film.

‘Hellraiser’

This 1987 film is one of the few older classics still available on Netflix. Over the past few years, their catalogue of films has skewed away from older films towards newer releases. Hellraiser is an iconic horror film to catch while you can.

It tells the story of a man who accidentally opens a portal to hell unleashing gruesome beings that tear is body apart. Later, the remaining pieces of Frank are brought back to life and the man tries to convince his former lover to lure men to him so he can use their blood to resurrect himself. It’s a terrifying story of nightmarish proportions with some of the best horror iconography ever.

Wes Craven’s ‘New Nightmare’

Wes Craven’s 1994 film is the seventh sequel in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but exists outside the continuity of the franchise as a whole. In New Nightmare, Freddy Krueger becomes more real than ever before, entering the real world and haunts the cast and crew of the original franchise.

If you’re a fan of the franchise or completely unfamiliar with the original films, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is full of scares that will make for a really awesome Halloween movie. It delivers the kind of smart and terrifying horror that we expect from Craven, while also operating as a really awesome homage to the original films.

‘The Wailing’

South Korean writer and director Hong-jin Na’s film The Wailing went mostly unseen in the states when it was released in 2016. Now that it’s on Netflix, it’s a great choice for audiences looking for a bit of horror this Halloween.

The Wailing follows a policeman in a small town trying to get to the bottom of a mysterious sickness spreading in his small village. The film excellently combines horror and fantasy elements to make for a frighteningly memorable viewing experience.

‘The Eyes of My Mother’

The Eyes of My Mother is one of the most horrifying films made in recent years. After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016, the film received a quiet release and is now available on Netflix.

The film tells the story of Francisca who experiences a massive family tragedy at a young age. This trauma ultimately leads to some horrifying conclusions, warping her ability to connect with the outside world. Shot in gorgeous black and white, The Eyes of My Mother is not for the faint of heart. It is an experience that will stay with you long after the film comes to a close.
